Position
Purpose:
The Exceptional Children (Special Education) Teaching Assistant (ECTA) supports general and special education classrooms, non‑classroom school settings, and community based learning sites, providing individualized and group support to students with disabilities under the supervision of licensed professionals.
- Recognize and demonstrate respect for individual differences among students and families.
- Maintain professional boundaries and refer questions about student progress to licensed professionals.
- Conduct activities with integrity and in compliance with applicable standards, policies and guidelines.
- Maintain dignity, privacy and confidentiality of all students and families.
- Establish and maintain professional and collegial relationships with school personnel, students and families.
- Demonstrate flexibility and teamwork.
- High School Diploma.
- Minimum of 48 hours of college level coursework with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Ability to operate a computer and related software such as Microsoft Office or Google documents.
- Two to five years serving as a classroom teacher assistant.
- Training in working with students with special needs.
- Bilingual oral and/or written skills (e.g., Spanish).
General
- Establish and maintain rapport with learners.
- Monitor safety and well‑being of students.
- Prepare and organize materials to support teaching.
- Support students’ independence, self‑advocacy and self‑reliance.
- Use adaptive equipment and assistive technology.
- Maintain a safe and equitable learning environment.
- Respond to emergency situations.
- Proctor routine classroom and standardized tests.
- Attend meetings and participate with team members.
- Compete in staff development workshops and meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Instructional Supports and Strategies
- Demonstrate proficiency in academics appropriate to the job.
- Follow written instructional plans, including IEPs.
- Communicate student information to the instructional team.
- Support effective instructional strategies in literacy and mathematics.
- Review and reinforce learning activities.
- Modify pace of instruction and provide cues.
- Provide least intrusive support and fade physical proximity.
- Provide feedback to students.
- Adapt the physical environment and learning materials.
Functional Skills
- Use techniques for personal and medical care as directed.
- Support daily living and functional skills.
- Receive training for delegatable special health care needs.
Social, Emotional, Behavioral Supports
- Follow written behavioral intervention plans.
- Implement positive behavior supports.
- Implement individualized reinforcement systems.
- Support social‑emotional and behavioral interventions.
- Assist in teaching specific behaviors and procedures.
- Respond to student actions using strategies.
- Support development of social skills and facilitate peer interactions.
- Model conflict resolution and collaborative problem solving.
Community or Job Coaching
- Encourage engagement in school and community activities.
- Support students in following community, school and classroom expectations.

- Record objective and accurate data.
