About us:

The Water and Sewer Pipe Maintenance division is located at 1103 Mebane Street in Burlington. The Water & Sewer Pipe Maintenance division was established in 1907 to maintain the city water system. The system presently serves approximately 30,000 Water and Sewer accounts through a distribution system containing over 2,500,000 feet of pipe and a collection system which has over 2,000,000 feet of pipe.

What you will do:

This employee performs semi-skilled manual labor to maintain water and wastewater facilities and their surroundings. Responsibilities include landscaping, equipment maintenance, patching pipes and pavement, driving a City truck, loading and unloading supplies, applying weed killer, directing traffic, cleaning plant structures, janitorial work, and other physically demanding tasks. This role requires a higher level of knowledge and independence compared to the Maintenance Worker I classification, with the employee performing duties with minimal supervision.

Water

and Wastewater Maintenance:
  • Manually checks and operates water and wastewater valves, ensuring proper function and reporting any replacement needs to the supervisor.
  • Assists with water and wastewater main break repairs by digging, cutting pipes, clamping, and back filling to restore service.
Equipment & Facility Maintenance:
  • Paints equipment and buildings to maintain the appearance and protection of facilities.
  • Operates a variety of tools and equipment including shovels, dump trucks, jackhammers, and tamps for digging, patching, and back filling pavement or grounds.
  • Handles deliveries and stocks supplies, ensuring adequate materials are available for ongoing work.
Landscaping & Groundskeeping:
  • Performs general landscaping duties such as mowing, trimming, pruning, and tree removal to keep City grounds neat and well-maintained.
  • Shovels snow from sidewalks and applies ice-melting materials to ensure safety during winter months.
Facility Cleaning & Sanitation:
  • Cleans water and wastewater plant structures including bar screens, scum boxes, and sand filters, ensuring they are free from debris and functioning properly.
  • Takes responsibility for cleanliness in City facilities by emptying trash and recycling containers, mopping floors, and sanitizing restrooms, offices, and hallways.
  • Sets up wet floor signs to maintain safety by preventing slips and falls.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Assists lab assistants with the distribution and collection of water samples for testing.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, contributing to the smooth operation of all tasks.
General Maintenance Knowledge &

Skills:
  • Possesses a solid understanding of general maintenance work and procedures performed in water or wastewater treatment plants, ensuring smooth operations.
Equipment Operation & Proficiency:
  • Skilled in operating a variety of maintenance equipment including mowers, tractors, dump trucks, leaf blowers, forklifts, chainsaws, weed eaters, tamps, jackhammers, and more for efficient facility upkeep.
Landscaping & Grounds Maintenance:
  • Experienced in seeding, applying straw, fertilizing, mowing, and performing general landscaping tasks such as shoveling, raking, and trimming.
  • Adept at safely erecting signage to ensure the public is informed and safe around work crews.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency and some work experience in general maintenance work, preferably in a water treatment plant, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
Physical Requirements and

Working Conditions:
  • Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects.
  • Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, hearing and repetitive motions.
  • The employee is required to have the visual acuity to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes, and other equipment.
  • Employee is subject to hazards including physical conditions with proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, noise, and atmospheric conditions.
  • Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.
