General Purpose
We are looking for passionate, dedicated, and creative staff to work directly with school‑aged campers by engaging and providing supervision for them at camp while making a positive impact in their lives.
Leddy Park Arena holds multiple camps throughout the year that require camp counselors and work within the Burlington Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront Department. Camps at Leddy take place during February School Break, April School Break, and the Summer. Camp counselors work in cooperation with BPRW staff to help facilitate a recreation camp program which includes: ice skating, swimming, crafts, outdoor exploration, organized sports, group games, and more.
Camp counselors are responsible for designing and executing camp activities and working with the team to provide a safe, fun, and enriching program. Staff training will be June 15‑18, and camps will run June 22‑August 14, with July 3rd off in observance of Independence Day.
Union Affiliation: Non‑Union
Pay Grade: $19.15 - $19.65 Hourly
Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/week.
Essential Job Functions- Follow all departmental and state rules and regulations.
- Assist in the planning and instruction of the camp program.
- Program counselors may be asked to lead activities and lead specific groups of children.
- Check area for safety hazards and report deficiencies to supervisor.
- Supervise and instruct groups of children ensuring safety and fun experience.
- Engage in program activities, including ice skating, swimming, crafts, and games.
- Use leadership skills and positive attitude with children to encourage engagement.
- Attend staff meetings and staff trainings as required.
- Respond effectively and promptly to communications from supervisor and co‑workers.
- Report all accidents and incidents occurring within jurisdiction to supervisor.
- Administer proper First Aid as required.
- Required to be on time when scheduled to work and accurately record time.
- Required to clean up at the end of the shift and maintain equipment organization.
- Participate in the evaluation process.
- Participate, if able, in skating programming portion of camp.
Job Requirements
- Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
- High school diploma in progress or equivalent required.
- Previous experience working with children in a group or individualized situation preferred.
- College coursework in Education, Childhood Development, Family Studies or Recreation Management preferred.
- Ability to supervise and organize groups of children for activity programs.
- Ability to deal effectively with discipline problems, co‑workers and supervisors.
- Knowledge of safety principles and practices as they apply to group activities.
- Knowledge of a variety of recreation/leisure activities and group games.
- A cooperative attitude and a team player.
- Enthusiasm, patience, a desire to work with children, and creativity.
- Ability/knowledge of ice skating is not required but a positive attribute to camps at Leddy Arena.
- Upon conditional offer of employment, candidate must successfully complete a background investigation.
