Burlington School District is seeking Student Teachers and Education Interns interested in gaining hands‑on classroom experience by serving as a substitute teacher. This role is an excellent opportunity to build your instructional skills, strengthen your classroom management abilities, and gain real‑world teaching experience while supporting our K–12 schools.

Student Teacher/Intern Substitutes help create a consistent, safe, and engaging learning environment by following lesson plans, maintaining routines, and supporting students in the absence of the classroom teacher.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide instruction and supervision in K–12 classrooms using teacher‑provided plans.
  • Support a diverse range of learners, including students with disabilities and English Language Learners.
  • Carry out the responsibilities of the classroom teacher in their absence.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA requirements.
  • Follow teacher directions, classroom procedures, and building expectations.
  • Leave feedback or notes for the classroom teacher regarding student progress or daily activities.
  • Collaborate and communicate with faculty, support staff, and administrators to meet student needs and maintain a positive school environment.
  • Maintain a safe and welcoming learning space and follow district policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Complete any necessary documentation or reports.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the building principal, superintendent, or designee.
QUALIFICATIONS Education & Experience
  • Currently enrolled in a teacher preparation program, student teaching placement, or education internship (or recently completed one).
  • Experience working with children or youth (e.g., tutoring, coaching, camp counseling, after‑school programs).
  • Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Attributes
  • Coursework or experience supporting English Language Learners.
  • Experience collaborating with mentor teachers or participating in professional learning communities.
  • Interest in student‑centered learning practices and personalized instruction.
  • Exposure to inclusive or special education practices.
  • Ongoing coursework in education, curriculum, instruction, or diversity/equity topics.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Conditions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Face‑to‑face interactions with students and staff
  • Varying classroom noise levels
  • Outdoor supervision in various weather conditions
  • Decision making and classroom management responsibilities
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful or unexpected situations

  • SALARY: $20.50 per hour (Per Diem); paid bi‑weekly
  • BENEFITS: This position is not benefits‑eligible
  • Substituting only for the classroom of your program
