Youth Summer Outreach works in cooperation with Library Supervisors carrying out specific program activities that reach youth (Pre-school age through High School age) throughout the city at various parks, camps, and school programs as well as generally support the Library’s Youth Summer Challenge Program. Prior experience working with children is desirable. Outreach staff serve as ambassadors of the Fletcher Free Library, promoting literacy, experiential learning, inclusion, and equitable access to library services throughout the Burlington community.

Pay Grade:$20.00 Hourly

Remote Tier 1:Zero (0) days remote/week

Responsibilities
  • Visit various parks and partner organization sites weekly and deliver books as well as bring a variety of materials for learning activities
  • Sign up youth for the summer challenge program & distribute free books.
  • Plan and facilitate activities & programs for youth and engage youth in participating in them
  • Assist with the documentation/evaluation process by gathering and tallying feedback forms, taking photos, assisting with youth & caregivers with forms, collecting participant feedback
  • Setting up and taking down for activities & programs including tables, chairs, wagons, activity bins, book bins, etc.
  • Write a final report on the Youth Summer Outreach experience
  • Follow all City of Burlington, Library department and state rules and regulations.
  • Assist in the planning and instruction of the outreach program.
  • Check Outreach areas for safety hazards and report deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Attend staff meetings and staff trainings as required.
  • Maintain positive, professional relationships with community partners, camp staff, and caregivers.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Promote library services, programs, and resources to families and youth.
  • Maintain accurate daily attendance and participation records.
  • Ensure safe handling and transport of library materials and equipment.
  • Model respectful, inclusive behavior and trauma-informed youth engagement practices.
  • Assist youth and caregivers with Beanstack or other digital components of the Summer Challenge.
  • Support inclusive participation for youth of varying abilities and language backgrounds.
Qualifications
  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • Experience working in community-based, outdoor, or camp settings preferred.li>
  • Understanding of child development stages preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • College course work in Education, childhood development, family studies, or recreation preferred.
  • Must have reliable vehicular transportation for work related purposes
  • Ability to supervise and organize large groups of children for activity programs.
  • Ability to deal effectively with behavior problems, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to de-escalate challenging situations.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills preferred (Spanish, French, Nepali, Somali, etc.).
  • Knowledge of safety principles and practices as they apply to group activities.
  • Knowledge of a variety of literacy activities and group games.
  • Ability to work in a changing environment and understand nuance.
  • Enthusiasm, patience, a desire to work with children and creativity.
  • Ability to Pass a State of Vermont Background Check for Childcare Providers and be fingerprinted as part of this process.
  • Complete required trainings before the start of the Library Outreach program
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Strong communication skills with children, caregivers, and community partners.
  • Ability to work independently in off-site environments with limited supervision.
  • Basic technology skills (email, Google Docs, mobile apps, basic data entry).
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
