General Purpose

Director designs, facilitates, and oversees our school-aged youth licensed summer day camp, including supervision of staff and scheduling activities. Director will be overseeing one site of camp serving 60 children per week. Program activities include arts and crafts, recreational games, athletic activities, music, nature walks, swimming, and off‑site camp activities. This role will start around May 15. Camp runs June 22‑August 14, with July 3rd off in observance of Independence Day.

Essential Job Functions
  • Available May 15 (at the latest) through August 14, 2026.
  • Plan and coordinate day-to-day operations for camp program, including but not limited to: summer food program, camper files, weekly transportation, space maintenance, off- and on-site activities, enrichment activities, and staff appreciation.
  • Assist with set up of summer camp staff training and specific State Licensed approved training.
  • Inventory, replace, and coordinate supplies before and during camp.
  • Assist with beginning of summer set up of and end of summer take down of camp spaces.
  • Supervise, communicate with, and mentor camp staff.
  • Provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for participants.
  • Provide excellent customer service to parents, guardians, and caregivers through on‑going communication and program updates.
  • Support, along with program counselors, the supervision, engagement, and well‑being of participants on‑site, as well as while on field trips.
  • Conduct staff evaluations.
  • Provide coverage in the event of staff shortages.
  • Become familiar with and support adherence to all guidelines and procedures as they pertain to the Federally funded Summer Food Services Program (SFSP).
  • Required to be on site 30 minutes before and after at the end of the camp day.
  • Follow all departmental and state license rules & regulations.
  • Maintain a safe area and report any deficiencies, incidents, or accidents to supervisor.
  • Attend staff meetings and staff trainings as required.
  • Administer proper First Aid as required.
  • Participate in the evaluation process.
  • Position may require operation of City vehicle and/or personal vehicle to conduct City business.
Qualifications/Basic

Job Requirements

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • Day Camp Director – Shall meet or exceed the following qualifications:
    Possess a BA, BS, or Associate’s Degree along with one of the following:
    • At least 10 months direct work experience with school‑aged children or
    • Vermont On‑the‑Job Training certificate or
    • Vermont After school Professional Credential or
    • Vermont Program Director Credential or
    • Vermont Teacher License or
    • Master’s Degree in a youth‑related field
  • College coursework in Education, Childhood Development, Family Studies or Recreation Management required.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Operation of a City vehicle or personal vehicle to conduct City business without providing proof of a valid driver’s license to Human Resources will not be permitted. A valid driver’s license shall be defined as a current state of residence‑issued license to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways. Position also requires the ability to be covered under the City’s vehicle insurance policy prior to operation of any City vehicles or non‑City vehicles for City business.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Ability to supervise and organize groups of children for activity programs.
  • Ability to deal effectively with discipline problems, co‑workers and supervisors.
  • Knowledge of safety principles and practices as they apply to group activities.
  • Knowledge of a variety of recreation/leisure activities and group games.
  • A cooperative attitude and a team player.
  • Enthusiasm, patience, a desire to work with children and creativity.
  • Upon conditional offer of employment candidate must successfully complete background investigation.
