Special Education Teacher – Burlington High School SY26/27

Burlington School District invites applications for a passionate and energetic Special Education Teacher at Burlington High School. The role involves case‑managing up to 25 special‑education students and supporting a broader population of around 300 students. The teacher will be part of a high‑energy, fast‑paced special education team and individual student teams.

Instructional Strategies
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans, class activities, and instructional materials that facilitate active and meaningful learning; develop lesson plans and tests in accordance with expectations.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and times designated.
  • Assess and record learning on an ongoing basis and adjust instruction based on assessments.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, participate in EST and with other Special Educators to meet students' needs.
  • Participate in scheduled in‑service days and staff meetings.
  • Use discretion when discussing school affairs to maintain positive school‑community relations.
  • Implement district philosophy, goals, and instructional objectives through instruction and action.
  • Comply with Board and administrative policies, regulations, and procedures; reinforce these expectations with students.
  • Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected abuse, harassment, bullying, hazing, zero‑tolerance offenses) to maintain safety and meet state law and board policy; respond to emergency situations as required.
  • Attend work according to established days/hours.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as appropriate and assigned.
Qualifications

Job Requirements

  • Licensed or eligible for Vermont Educators License.
  • Endorsement in elementary level Special Education (82) at high‑school level or eligible for Vermont Provisional License.
  • Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience case‑managing up to 25 special‑education students and a larger population of ~300 students.
  • Experience supporting students with social cognition, behavioral, and social‑emotional needs.
  • Experience training and supervising para‑educators providing support services to special‑needs students.
  • Experience planning, leading, and managing large and potentially complex IEP meetings with students, parents, teachers, outside agencies, community mentors, and other support personnel.
  • Understanding of cultural competency (as demonstrated through Essay 1 on School Spring).
  • Knowledge of best practices regarding frameworks of student behavioral support.

Preferred Attributes

  • Training and/or experience with English Language Learners.
  • Experience in a professional/teaching learning community; co‑teaching or collaboration with other educators.
  • Evidence of student‑centered learning approaches, including personalizing instruction and supporting students in meeting core proficiencies.
  • Evidence of implementing inclusive practices for students with special needs.
  • Ongoing postgraduate coursework in education or subject area, including diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Employment Benefits & Terms
  • Salary: $58,471 to $83,781 per year (per the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Burlington Education Association); paid bi‑weekly with a lump‑sum summer payment.
  • School Year: 10 months, 187 workdays (based on start date), 7.75 hrs per day / 38.75 hrs per week.
  • Benefits: Eligible on start date; 30 days to enroll in coverage from start day.
  • Paid Time: Sick Time / Personal Time as per the Master Agreement.
