Job DescriptionUnder the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Para educator will assist a licensed teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of children in a Special Education program. The role includes supporting a child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP), addressing the child's physical and health needs, monitoring and reporting academic progress, and carrying out a variety of clerical and supportive duties related to classroom activities and management.
EssentialFunctions
Support the developmental growth of each child:
- Facilitate engagement in play activities by asking open‑ended questions and offering suggestions to add complexity.
- Support language development by describing activities as they happen.
- Use positive behavior management techniques to motivate children.
- Understand children’s behaviors and motivation.
Work collaboratively with the teaching team:
- Assist in supervising students across environments.
- Assist in preparing materials and setting up classrooms for daily activities.
- Assist in collecting, collating, and recording data.
- Minimum:
At least two years of post‑secondary education or successful completion of the Praxis exam. - Preferred:
Coursework in a childhood‑related field (e.g., psychology, education, human development) and an associate or bachelor’s degree.
- Preferred:
Experience working with children who have special needs.
- Work environment includes offices, classrooms, outdoor spaces, community preschools, and other school settings.
- Occasional exposure to weather extremes.
- Ability to tolerate high noise levels.
- Strength and stamina to safely restrain a student if necessary.
High‑school diploma plus at least two additional years of education; minimum of two years of experience in education or a related field; effective communication skills with students, parents, and staff.
SalaryAs per the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Paraeducators of the Burlington School District.
