Associate Director of Teaching & Learning

Burlington School District is seeking a district‑level leader to support the Director of Curriculum and the Executive Director of School Leadership in executing the district’s academic vision, with primary responsibility for middle and high school education (Grades 6–12). The Associate Director will focus on secondary curriculum alignment, teacher and coach capacity building, MTSS implementation, and new teacher induction and mentoring.

Responsibilities
  • 1. Secondary Curriculum & MTSS Alignment
    • Partner with the Director of Curriculum to develop, evaluate, and revise a guaranteed, culturally responsive curriculum across all core content areas and grade levels.
    • Manage review, adoption, and implementation of secondary (Grades 6–12) curricula and instructional materials aligned with state and federal standards.
    • Lead the development and implementation of secondary MTSS, including PLCs, Tier 3 Teams, and data‑based decision‑making processes.
  • 2. Instructional Leadership Support
    • Provide direct support to instructional coaches across the district and build coach capacity.
    • Conduct non‑evaluative walkthroughs with instructional leaders to calibrate expectations and practices.
    • Support district‑wide PLCs and facilitate training for PLC leaders at the secondary level.
  • 3. New Teacher Development & Mentoring
    • Co‑lead onboarding, induction, and mentoring programs for new and early‑career educators.
    • Match novice teachers with qualified mentors and monitor the effectiveness of supporting relationships.
    • Design professional learning opportunities to strengthen teacher retention, classroom management, and instructional practice.
  • 4. District‑Wide Responsibilities
    • Support substitute recruitment and hiring in partnership with Human Resources.
    • Coordinate hiring processes for general education teaching positions within collaboration with principals and HR.
    • Serve on district leadership teams, including the District Instructional Leadership Team (ILT).
  • 5. Professional Learning
    • Develop professional learning opportunities in collaboration with the Director of Multilingual Programs, Executive Director of Student Support Services, and Director of Equity.
    • Coordinate district‑level professional learning activities, including PLCs and in‑service days.
    • Collect and analyze data to identify professional learning needs and evaluate program effectiveness.
    • Lead curriculum and instructional material review processes, including piloting and adoption of instructional programs and digital resources.
  • 6. Collaboration & Systems Leadership
    • Establish seamless PreK–12 curricular progression and vertical articulation in partnership with the Elementary Associate Director.
    • Collaborate with the District Data Team to analyze student achievement trends and equity gaps.
    • Partner with the Technology Integration Team to support effective assessment and instructional practices.
  • 7. Leadership & Administration
    • Report directly to the Director of Curriculum and provide regular progress updates on curriculum, MTSS, and induction initiatives.
    • Collaborate with instructional coaches and school counseling departments to align academic and student support systems.
    • Support the development and implementation of school‑level and district‑level Continuous Improvement Plans.
    • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Executive Director of School Leadership.
Required Qualifications
  • Education
    • Minimum required:
      Bachelor’s degree with a focus in PreK–12 Education.
    • Preferred:
      Master’s degree in Education Leadership or related field.
    • Certification required: VT Educator Administrator License (Curriculum Director or Principal).
  • Experience
    • Three to five years of successful secondary teaching experience.
    • Experience as a principal, assistant principal, instructional coach, or district‑level instructional leader.

Benefits & Terms
  • Salary
    : $100,000 to $115,000 per year (paid bi‑weekly).
  • School year
    : 12 months, 261 workdays (based on start date).
