Elementary Teacher (Limited Teacher Contract) – Burlington School District (SY26/27)

Starting Date: Aug 18, 2026

Responsibilities
  • Instruct elementary students in subject matters and skills that promote social, physical, and intellectual growth.
  • Create, organize, and implement meaningful and engaging lessons and instructional programs that guide students to fulfill their academic potential and develop character, personality and social and emotional skills.
  • Promote enthusiasm for growth and development; adhere to state curriculum standards; collect and report detailed student performance records.
  • Create and maintain a safe and respectful learning environment and build mutually trusting relationships with students from all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans, class activities, and a variety of instructional materials that facilitate active and meaningful learning.
  • Deliver assignments in designated locations and times; assess learning continuously and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, including EST and Special Educators, to meet needs of all students, including those with disabilities.
  • Participate in scheduled in‑service days and staff meetings; use discretion when discussing school affairs; uphold district philosophy, goals and instructional objectives.
  • Report incidents (fights, suspected abuse, substance abuse, harassment, bullying, hazing, zero‑tolerance offenses, etc.) and respond to emergencies and safety concerns.
  • Attend school days and hours of work; perform other assigned tasks as needed.
Instructional Strategies
  • Develop lesson plans and tests in accordance with established expectations.
  • Assess and record learning continuously and adjust instruction based on assessments.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in educational study teams (EST) and with Special Educators.
  • Participate in scheduled in‑service days and staff meetings.
  • Use discretion in discussing school affairs and support positive school‑community relations.
  • Implement the district’s philosophy of education, goals, and instructional objectives in instruction and actions.
  • Comply with Board and administrative policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Maintain student safety and a positive learning environment in accordance with state law and board policies.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Arts or Science (required).
  • Licensed or eligible for a Vermont Educators License.
  • Endorsement in Elementary Education or eligible for a Vermont Provisional License.
  • Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Attributes
  • Training or experience with English Language Learners.
  • Experience in a professional/teaching learning community, including co‑teaching and collaboration with other educators.
  • Evidence of student‑centered learning approaches, including personalizing instruction and supporting students meeting core proficiencies.
  • Evidence of implementing inclusive practices for students with special needs.
  • Ongoing postgraduate coursework in education or subject area, including diversity, equity & inclusion.
Employment Benefits & Terms
  • Salary: As per the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Burlington Education Association. Position paid bi‑weekly with a lump‑sum summer payment.
  • School Year: 10 months, 187 workdays (based on start date), 7.75 per day / 38.75 per week.
  • Benefits: Eligible on start date. 30 days to enroll in coverage from start day (BSD benefits).
  • Paid Time: Sick Time / Personal Time as per the Master Agreement.
