Associate Director of Teaching & Learning

Burlington School District is seeking one individual to join our Teaching & Learning team as the Associate Director of Teaching & Learning.

The Associate Director of Teaching & Learning (Secondary Focus) is a district-level leader who assists the Director of Curriculum and the Executive Director of School Leadership in executing the District's academic vision, with primary responsibility for middle and high school education (Grades 6–12). This role supports secondary curriculum alignment, builds teacher and coach capacity, strengthens secondary Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and supports the District's new teacher induction and mentoring programs.

Essential Functions:

1. Secondary Curriculum & MTSS Alignment
  • In partnership with the Director of Curriculum, support the systematic development, evaluation, and revision of a guaranteed and viable curriculum across all core content areas and grade levels.
  • Ensure instructional materials and methodologies are research-based, culturally responsive, and aligned with state and federal standards.
  • Manage the review, adoption, and implementation of secondary (Grades 6–12) curricula across all content areas.
  • Support the development of MTSS at the secondary level, including the implementation of robust teacher teams (PLCs, Tier 3 Teams, and ESTs) and assessment systems that support data-informed decision-making and ensure all learners achieve grade-level standards.
2. Instructional Leadership Support
  • Provide direct support to instructional coaches across the District in partnership with the Director of Curriculum.
  • Build the capacity of instructional coaches and support the implementation of a robust coaching model that provides consistent instructional support for teachers at the secondary level.
  • Conduct regular non-evaluative walkthroughs with instructional leaders (coaches and principals) to calibrate instructional expectations and practices.
  • Support the development and effectiveness of district-wide PLCs, including the facilitation and training of PLC leaders at the secondary level.
3. New Teacher Development & Mentoring
  • Co-lead the District's onboarding, induction, and mentoring programs for new and early-career educators.
  • Match novice educators with qualified mentors and monitor the effectiveness of mentoring relationships.
  • Design targeted professional learning opportunities to strengthen teacher retention, classroom management, and instructional practice.
4. District-Wide Responsibilities
  • Support district-wide substitute recruitment and hiring in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Partner with the Elementary Associate Director to coordinate pooled hiring processes for general education teaching positions, as appropriate, in collaboration with principals and Human Resources.
  • Serve on district leadership teams, including the District Instructional Leadership Team (ILT).
5. Professional Learning
  • Collaboratively develop professional learning opportunities in partnership with the Director of Multilingual Programs, Executive Director of Student Support Services, and Director of Equity.
  • Support the annual development of a Professional Learning Plan for secondary staff aligned with district priorities and goals.
  • Coordinate district-level professional learning activities, including PLCs and in-service days, in support of district goals.
  • Collect and analyze data to identify and address professional learning needs across the District.
  • Lead curriculum and instructional material review processes, including the piloting, evaluation, and adoption of textbooks, instructional programs, digital resources, and technology subscriptions.
6. Collaboration & Systems Leadership
  • Partner with the Elementary Associate Director to establish a seamless PreK–12 curricular progression and vertical articulation plan.
  • Collaborate regularly with the District Data Team to analyze student achievement trends, monitor equity gaps, and evaluate program effectiveness.
