Adjunct Instructor

The Science Program at Champlain College invites applications for an Adjunct Instructor to join us for the Fall 2026 semester to teach one of our general education science courses.

Successful candidates will deliver engaging instruction in their specified scientific discipline and help students build scientific literacy skills. Candidates must commit to building inclusive learning environments to support student success and growth.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging instruction in science courses
  • Maintain a safe laboratory environment for hands-on learning
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback on student assignments and assessments
  • Maintain current knowledge of developments in pedagogical approaches
  • Collaborate with program faculty to ensure curriculum coherence and quality

Course Descriptions

  • SCI-140:
    Biology of Nutrition and Fitness
    This course introduces students to the biochemistry and physiology of nutrition and exercise. Emphasis will be placed on human body systems, such as musculoskeletal, digestive, respiratory and circulatory, and their relationship to nutrition and fitness. Students will also study the biochemistry of energy conversion as it relates to exercise physiology. Laboratory sessions are designed to reinforce, by a hands-on approach, the principles discussed in lecture.

    Lecture:
    Tuesday, 5:30 - 8:15 pm;
    Lab:
    Thursday, 5:30 - 8:15 pm
  • SCI-150:
    Environmental Earth Science
    Introduces the student to the main elements of the earth systems, and analyzes the effects of human interactions with these systems. Emphasis will be given to surface phenomena and to the application of the scientific method to current environmental issues. Laboratory sessions reinforce concepts introduced in class through a hands-on approach. Lecture:
    Thursday 5:30-8:15 pm;
    Lab:
    Wednesday 5:30-8:15 pm
  • SCI-250:
    Physics I
    This physics course is an algebra-based investigation of classical Newtonian mechanics. Topics include measurement and error, vector quantities, translational and rotational motion, Newton's laws, work energy and power, and properties of materials. Laboratory sessions are designed to reinforce material presented in class as well as introduce students to laboratory procedures and the scientific method. Lecture:
    Wednesday 5:30-8:15 pm;
    Lab:
    Monday 5:30-8:15 pm

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a field relevant to the topic taught. PhD preferred.
  • Experience teaching college-level courses preferred
  • Experience with learning management systems desirable
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment
  • Ability to commute to Burlington, VT campus for all scheduled class sessions

Work Arrangement

This is a contract position with responsibilities based on course assignment for the Fall 2026 semester. Faculty are expected to:

  • Be on campus for all scheduled class sessions
  • Maintain regular availability for student consultation during the semester
  • Participate in occasional department events or meetings as needed

Compensation

Compensation for this position is determined by:

  • Credit hours taught per semester
  • Current collective bargaining agreement rates for adjunct faculty

Detailed compensation information will be provided to qualified candidates during the interview process. Champlain College offers competitive adjunct faculty rates consistent with regional standards and union agreements.
