This position is part of an English Language Learning (ELL) Program team and will contribute to the ongoing work of the ELL programs for adult learners, particularly through the offering of English Language classes at beginner and low‑intermediate levels. In addition, this person will be part of Mercy Connections’ core staff and will be involved in organization‑wide programs, events and responsibilities, such as Community Lunch, Celebration of Learning Days, and other broad‑scope events.
Evening hours (till 7:30 p.m.) may be required one day per week, usually Wednesdays.
- Serve as Instructor for 2–3 English classes; some may meet 2x per week; others, once per week. Classes will likely be for complete beginner level up to low intermediate level.
- Act as substitute, when possible, for other ELL Instructors as needed.
- Communicate with prospective ELL students/inquiries to interview and assess needs (learning needs, logistical & schedule needs), then match them into classes or other programs as appropriate and possible.
- Collect, monitor, and enter student enrollment forms into the organization’s database (NEON). Obtain missing information from students.
- Collaborate with other ELL Team members as needed to ensure correct class or other program placements, as well as referrals if needed to other organizations teaching ELL.
- Confirm registration and start date/time of classes with students (this may be via email, text, or individual calls).
- Assist ELL team in development and ongoing use of student assessment, placement and progress protocols.
- Work with ELL team to create and maintain an ELL resource bank of materials; assess changing needs of populations being served; develop new programs to meet needs, as possible.
- Prepare materials and purchase orders as needed; track and maintain resources/materials needed for classes or in ELL resource library.
- Assist with administration of surveys/evaluations given to participants.
- As a member of the core Mercy Connections staff, Instructors also sometimes perform other duties expected of all staff, such as taking shifts at front desk, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all guests, and teaming to support participant needs even outside of the ELL population.
- Minimum requirement: BA/BS in TESOL or related degree.
- Certificate in TESOL combined with significant experience in the classroom may also be considered.
- Experience with teaching adults.
- General/education background or experience supporting adult students with other academic needs.
- Experience with multicultural populations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations across diverse learning styles.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Solid organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.
- Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Ability to create a safe, hospitable, and effective learning environment for adult learners.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Teams & SharePoint, and generally comfortable with web‑based applications. Willingness to learn new tools where needed.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working indoors on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- This position is in‑person at Mercy Connections in Burlington, Vermont. Employees are expected to use their own means of transportation.
