The Fraud Officer is responsible for preventing, detecting, investigating, and mitigating fraudulent activity affecting the credit union and its members. This role plays a critical part in protecting member assets, minimizing financial losses, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting a strong culture of risk awareness. The Fraud Officer works closely with Retail, Compliance, and other back-office departments to monitor transactions, investigate suspicious activity, and enhance fraud prevention controls.

Salary: $30 + dependent on experience

Location: Must have ability to work out of office in South Burlington, VT

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Fraud detection and investigation to include monitoring of member accounts and transactions for fraudulent or unusual activity. Support staff or work directly with the member in resolving issues. Investigate confirmed or suspected fraud cases and determine root cause, exposure, and loss impact. Take appropriate action to mitigate losses, including account restrictions and card reissuance. Document investigations thoroughly and maintain accurate case records.

Maintain awareness of emerging fraud schemes and industry best practices.

Identify fraud patterns, trends, and vulnerabilities across products and channels. Recommend enhancements to fraud detection tools, procedures, and internal controls. Participate in fraud risk assessments, new product reviews, and system implementations from a fraud-risk perspective.

Educate credit union employees to identify and respond to potential fraud scenarios. Provide fraud support and education to members, including fraud prevention best practices, emerging fraud trends, and safe financial behaviors.

Prepare fraud metrics, loss reports, and trend analyses for management and committees. Track fraud losses, recoveries, and risk indicators.

Act as a liaison to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as local fraud groups.

Identify and recommend changes to any processes that are out of alignment with the credit union’s vision, mission, or values.

Develop an understanding and working knowledge of the credit union history, philosophy, organization, bylaws, policies, procedures and appropriate software systems. Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.
