Parking Maintenance Helper - Temporary

General Purpose – This position is responsible for providing routine, preventative maintenance and repair in the municipal garages and related property (Park Burlington). Duties include plumbing and electrical fixtures (as limited by code), masonry and concrete work, custodial tasks, garage security, and customer service.

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform routine, preventative maintenance, repair and light construction at garage facilities, including but not limited to light plumbing, electrical work, plumbing tasks (line draining, valve and fixture repair), and light bulb & battery replacement.
  • Clean and replace air filters; perform elevator upkeep (cab maintenance, cleaning, and fixture servicing).
  • Maintain heating and air conditioning systems, adjust as necessary.
  • Light carpentry and replacement of glass, doors or windows.
  • Install, clean, repair and replace signs in and outside the garages.
  • Maintain and install amenities such as trash receptacles and bike racks.
  • Masonry and concrete repair; paint line striping and marking with sprayer and stencils.
  • Assist contractors to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner.
  • Operate mechanical and manual equipment, making minor repairs and adjustments (e.g., replacement of shear pins, bolts, cotter pins, air cleaners, spark plugs).
  • Repair and maintain kiosk in parking garages and lots.
  • Pressure wash parking facilities and lots; operate sweeper in facilities and lots.
  • Custodial work includes opening garage facilities, turning on parking equipment, unlocking stair towers, and routine cleaning of parking payment equipment.
  • Sweep, clean, and remove trash from outdoor walkways, driveways, and facility grounds; vacuum and mop floors throughout all garages, elevators, stairwells, offices, booths, and bathrooms.
  • Empty and clean trash containers; prepare trash for removal by outside contractors.
  • Clean and sanitize bathroom sinks and toilets.
  • Maintain safe and accessible walkways, ramps, and exits using de‑icing products, cement, brick, and other materials.
  • Remove snow and ice from walkways and garage facilities using manual and mechanical equipment.
  • Report to supervisor on inventory and supply needs; replenish supplies in restroom dispensers.
  • Remove graffiti and address vandalism in parking facilities, notifying supervisor as necessary.
  • Remove biohazardous waste such as needles, feces, urine, vomit, pigeon feces, and blood.
  • Clean up homeless encampments.
  • Maintain records, checklists, and logs as required by supervisors.
  • Answer public questions and assist them when needed.
  • Ensure garage security and report unusual events to supervisor and/or Police.
  • Use equipment in accordance with all VOSHA and Department policies and procedures.
  • Keep all safety trainings up to date.
  • Complete Vueworks work orders daily.

Qualifications / Basic

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience in general facility maintenance work.
  • Possess and maintain a valid State Driver’s License.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of heating, plumbing and electrical systems.
  • Ability to operate a 3/4 ton truck with plow, lawn mower, string trimmer, and sweeper.
  • Effective communication skills with employees, vendors, tenants and the public.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Operate a variety of mechanical and hand tools as required.
