This position is responsible for supporting the Bike Path Maintenance Specialist and working with the Conservation team on day-to-day operations at various service locations which include: the Burlington Bike Path, 30+ miles of public accessory trails, in and around the Burlington Area Community Gardens, and other areas within City natural areas and open spaces.

Pay Grade: $19.65 - $21.00 Hourly

Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/week

Responsibilities
  • Support the maintenance of service locations using a utility vehicle, power mower, trimmers and other maintenance equipment
  • Maintain service areas including but not limited to, vegetation management, invasive species management, community garden infrastructure maintenance and improvements, trail construction and repairs, carpentry projects such as bridges, raised beds, turnpikes etc.
  • Collect and remove trash from service areas
  • Assist in graffiti removal including but not limited to painting, power washing, and chemical removal of damage
  • Assist with other less routine vegetation management including but not limited to brush clearing, vista clearing, tree and shrub maintenance, etc. using power equipment and hand tools
  • Monitor service locations for safety issues, invasive species, storm damage, repair needs, etc.
  • Participate in team work days
  • Assist in parks sign management such as fabrication, installation, repair, and design
  • Assist in the management of volunteer groups as needed
  • Assist in basic tool service and maintenance tasks on all equipment
  • Assist in acquiring and organizing necessary tools based on tasks or projects basic tool service
  • Other parks projects and activities as needed
  • Position may require the operation of City vehicles and/or personal vehicles in order to conduct City business
Qualifications
  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies
  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development
  • Minimum 1 year experience in the conservation/landscaping/construction field
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Ability to safely operate equipment including trucks, trailers, push mowers, trimmers, blowers, circular saws, table saws, impact drivers, and other construction and vegetation management equipment as needed
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and must be able to pass a motor vehicle check
  • Operation of a City vehicle or personal vehicle to conduct City business without providing proof of a valid driver's license to Human Resources will not be permitted. A valid driver’s license shall be defined as a current state of residence‑issued license to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways. Position also requires the ability to be covered under the City’s vehicle insurance policy prior to operation of any City vehicles or non‑City vehicles for City business
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public and volunteers about projects details, site specifics, safety, and the mission of the Parks Conservation Program
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Interest in conserving and preserving Burlington’s natural areas and open spaces
  • Ability to research and identify major invasive species and apply cultural control practices.
  • Ability to collect and compile data related to work plan
  • Basic trail knowledge and building techniques preferred
  • Shall possess basic computer skills
  • Ability to work well with others and independently
  • Willingness to learn and develop vegetation management and other skills as needed
