Overview
This position is based out of Oakledge Park and involves lite maintenance of the park, opening and closing restrooms, cleaning restrooms, posting shelter rentals, and cleaning shelter spaces as needed. The team will roam between beaches to clean up trash and debris, and to monitor water quality. The candidate will learn the City of Burlington’s water testing process and procedures, post and remove beach closed signs, and conduct water sampling for Cyanobacteria.
Strong customer service is required, as staff will interact with the public while performing testing.
- Enforce and observe park and City rules.
- Help people understand beach closures and opening procedures.
- Clean bathrooms.
- Assist beach customers as needed.
- Navigate the bike path as part of daily duties.
- Be able to kayak or paddleboard to perform water sampling.
- Learn new skills and adapt to evolving requirements.
- Learn about and spot Cyanobacteria.
- Learn and field questions about water quality based on BPRW’s water testing.
- Learn how to use Abraxis Strip tests and visually identify different forms of Cyanobacteria.
- Actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency within job responsibilities.
- Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through ongoing trainings and professional development.
- 18 years old or older.
- Water quality or environmental science experience is a plus.
- Must have a driver’s license and be able to pass a motor vehicle check.
- Must be willing to operate City or personal vehicles for City business with valid license and city insurance coverage.
- Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
- Must be willing to work outside in all weather.
- Must be first aid certified or able to obtain first aid certification before work begins.
- Must be willing to have fun!
