Overview

Transportation Security Officers are responsible for providing security and protection of travelers across all transportation sectors in a courteous and professional manner. Duties may include securing high-profile events, important figures, and anything that impacts our transportation systems.

Responsibilities
  • Operate screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo and on passengers, and prevent objects from being transported onto aircraft.
  • Perform searches and screenings, including potential physical interaction with passengers, bag searches, and lifting/carrying bags up to 50 lbs.
  • Control terminal entry and exit points.
  • Interact with the public, give directions, and respond to inquiries.
  • Maintain focus and situational awareness in a noisy, stressful environment to identify threats and make effective decisions in crises and routine situations.
  • Develop critical thinking skills to mitigate security threats, applying risk-based screening protocols as required by program requirements.
  • Learn and implement applicable Standard Operating Procedures and adapt to new information or obstacles.

Salary Information: The salary range for Burlington, VT (BTV - Burlington International Airport) is $54,104 to $66,706 per year, or $25.92 to $31.96 per hour, including locality pay of 19.45% and a retention incentive of 15% of adjusted pay unique to this duty location. The continuation of the incentive portion is contingent upon annual approval and funding.

Sign-on Bonus: The Transportation Security Administration is offering a sign-on bonus of up to $5,000 for this location, paid in two installments during the first 12 months of service. The airport’s sign-on bonus amount may change or be eliminated based on operational needs; any applicable amount will be communicated and agreed upon during the final job offer process.

At this time, this airport is only seeking qualified female candidates to meet mission-related staffing needs. Applications from male candidates will be accepted but not considered until staffing needs change.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment

  • You must possess U.S. Citizenship or be a U.S. National.
  • You must have reached the minimum age (18) at the time of application.
  • Selective Service registration is required.
  • Must pass a structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation.
  • Subject to post-employment random drug and/or alcohol testing.
  • Must be available to work various shifts and overtime, as needed.
  • Must be proficient in English (reading, writing, speaking, comprehending).
  • Mandatory travel for training and occasional travel may be required.
  • Exposure to potentially lethal devices and dangerous chemicals is inherent in this position.
Physical Demands
  • Maintain physical agility to squat and bend.
  • Repeatedly lift and manipulate baggage weighing up to 50 pounds and other objects subject to security processing.
  • Ability to walk up to three miles during a shift and stand for extended periods (up to 4 hours).
Qualifications

To qualify for the SV‑D pay band (equivalent to GS-5/6), you must meet one of the following:

  • Experience:

    At least one year of full-time work experience in security, aviation screening, or as an X-ray technician.
  • Education:

    High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or TASC high school equivalency certificate.

Credit for experience is based on a 40-hour workweek. National Service/volunteer experience is eligible for credit. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize offers to current or former political appointees if applicable. Other sections cover additional requirements and considerations as described by the agency.

  • Occasional travel required for New Hire training (minimum three weeks; up to six weeks in some locations). Training may occur away from the employee’s airport of record, with compensation per TSA Travel Policy.
