Maintain safety and order within correctional facilities, supervise inmates, enforce facility rules, assist in rehabilitation programs, and perform essential duties such as responding to emergencies, conducting searches, managing conflict, and providing support for inmate welfare. Officers work to create a secure environment and facilitate positive change.

• Facility Shadowing – Minimum 40 hours observing facility operations.
• Vermont Correctional Academy – Six‑week paid academy covering core skills.
• On‑the‑Job Training – Two weeks of supervised training after graduation.
• Probationary Period – Six‑month probation upon successful completion.

The Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility uses an innovative 2‑2‑3 schedule: two consecutive days on, two consecutive days off, three consecutive days on, two consecutive days off, repeating throughout the year.

• Day Shift: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
• Night Shift: 6:00 PM – 6:00 AM

• Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as required.
• Successful completion of annual mandatory training.

Correctional Officer I (Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility) is open to all state employees and external applicants.

• AHS background check and other required investigations per AHS policy.
• Compliance with DOC PREA requirements regarding sexual abuse history.
• Conviction history policy:
  Individuals with a felony conviction or recent misdemeanor sanctions may be eligible only with a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections.

• High school graduation or equivalent + 2 years full‑time work experience.
• OR One year college coursework + 1 year full‑time work experience.
• OR Two years college coursework.

Physical condition to perform essential duties, including donning a self‑contained breathing apparatus and performing evacuation/ rescue procedures, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must meet OSHA and CFR (e) medical evaluation standards.

• Experience working in a correctional setting.
