IRPros / PRAC – Precision Refrigeration & Air Conditioning is seeking an experienced Ammonia Refrigeration Technician to join our industrial refrigeration team. This role is responsible for the service, maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting of industrial refrigeration systems using ammonia as a refrigerant.
The ideal candidate will have hands‑on experience with industrial refrigeration equipment, strong mechanical troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and customer service. This position requires the ability to work independently at customer sites while communicating clearly with clients, service coordinators, management, and other team members.
Key Responsibilities- Perform service, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on industrial ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Diagnose issues involving compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, valves, piping, controls, VFDs, and related refrigeration equipment.
- Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and identify repair needs, safety concerns, or opportunities to improve system performance.
- Assist with equipment installations, system startups, commissioning, and service projects at customer facilities.
- Respond to service calls and emergency breakdowns in a safe, timely, and professional manner.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, P&IDs, electrical schematics, control drawings, and equipment documentation.
- Use specialized tools and equipment to repair, rebuild, or replace defective refrigeration components.
- Maintain accurate service records, work orders, parts usage, and job documentation.
- Follow all company policies, customer site requirements, OSHA, EPA, and ammonia refrigeration safety procedures.
- Communicate findings, repair recommendations, and system concerns clearly to customers and internal team members.
- Provide professional customer service while representing IRPros / PRAC in the field.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with industrial refrigeration technology, safety practices, and industry standards.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 2+ years of experience in industrial refrigeration, ammonia refrigeration, HVAC/R, or related mechanical service work preferred.
- Experience working with ammonia refrigeration systems strongly preferred.
- EPA Universal Certification preferred.
- RETA certification, including CARO or CIRO, is a plus.
- Knowledge of ammonia refrigeration safety practices, PSM/RMP requirements, and industry regulations is a plus.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot refrigeration, electrical, and control system issues.
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals, schematics, drawings, and work orders.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to use email, work order systems, and Microsoft Office.
- Strong communication, problem‑solving, and customer service skills.
- Must be dependable, safety‑focused, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must be willing and able to travel to customer sites as needed.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and work from elevated areas.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and industrial environments.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, and perform physical work for extended periods.
- Ability to work in cold temperatures, outdoor weather conditions, and varying customer site environments.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, and related service equipment.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment, including ammonia‑rated PPE when needed.
- Must be able to wear a respirator and pass a fit test if required by jobsite or company safety standards.
- Industrial refrigeration service or construction experience.
