Skagit River Steel and Recycling Ltd is seeking multiple hires within our recycling operations, including a Ferrous Labourer, Non‑Ferrous Labourer, and VDU (Vehicle Dismantling Unit) Labourer. Positions will be based out of our Burlington, WA location and will involve analyzing, sorting, cutting, shearing, and packaging recycled metals (Ferrous and Non‑Ferrous) for storage in the warehouse, collection in piles, and transport out of the yard, as well as safely preparing and dismantling vehicles for recycling at the car pad.
Responsibilities- Receives metals from customer and assist in unloading if required.
- Assesses and weighs various types and grades of recycled metals.
- Maximizes mix loads of scrap from customers by sorting, high‑grading and segregating accordingly.
- Loads and unloads trailers using a forklift.
- Drains fluids from vehicles and prepares them for baling.
- Dismantles scrap materials and removes high‑value metals from them.
- Ensures property, facilities, and equipment remain in good order.
- Communicates with customers and ensures they receive professional service.
- Cuts larger too‑thick pieces of metal into smaller marketable pieces.
- Clean‑up and maintenance of equipment and job site.
- Removes tires, batteries, catalytic converters, and mercury switches from vehicles.
- Drains all fluids from vehicles.
- Packages and prepares bus tires and batteries for transport.
- Ensures fire prevention and follows safety guidelines.
- Monitors all waste tanks.
- Completes all necessary paperwork (daily logs, inspection logs, etc.).
- Complies with all PPE requirements for the task and ensures all PPE is stored properly in a designated area.
- Communicates any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.
- Adheres to Company’s workplace safety policies, regulations, and compliances.
- Maintains working knowledge of changes in technology and operation techniques.
- Knowledgeable of recycled metal types and grades (training can be provided).
- Must have strong vehicle parts knowledge.
- Ability to use a forklift, skid steer or front‑end loader is an asset.
- Knowledgeable about general safety practices.
- Willingness to work in an outdoor environment (rain or shine).
- Ability to communicate professionally.
We frequently operate on and service federally regulated customers that require regular and random drug and alcohol screening (including suppliers and contractors). As such, you will also be subject to an initial and then ongoing random drug and alcohol screening as a condition of your employment.
