Position Summary

BCIT’s  School of Business + Media  is seeking a  temporary, part‑time (0.2 FTE)  Faculty, 3D Modeling, Art and Animation. We are seeking individuals who are highly qualified, enthusiastic, committed to quality and innovation in meeting our students’ needs, and who value the importance of teamwork in the workplace.

MDAA 1415 Art Foundations (20%)

In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of art. Students develop and practice their skills while learning the principles of art composition. Movement, contrast, proximity, emphasis, balance will all be explored and how they can be used to lead the viewer’s eye around the artwork. Students will learn how to use leading lines and color to create appealing artwork. Famous works of art will be examined to explore these techniques.

Thumbnail sketching will be used quickly to form ideas. Students will gain digital painting and photo manipulation techniques using a leading 2D software package.

Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will deliver high‑quality instruction within the 3D Modeling, Art and Animation diploma program. Responsibilities include preparing and delivering course materials; assessing and evaluating student performance; providing mentorship, feedback, and academic support; maintaining course records; fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment; and ensuring curriculum delivery reflects current industry standards and practices. Instructors are expected to collaborate with colleagues, contribute to program quality and continuous improvement initiatives, and support student success through professional, effective, and student‑centered teaching.

Qualifications

Diploma or Degree in 3D Animation, Game Art, Visual Effects, Computer Graphics, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional industry experience.

Minimum 5 years of professional experience in visual development, concept art, illustration, matte painting, or a related role in the animation, film, or game development industry.

Strong understanding of art fundamentals, including composition, shape language, colour theory, lighting, and visual storytelling.

Expertise with 3D software tools (Maya) and how traditional art fundamentals translate into a 3D art workflow.

Demonstrated expertise in drawing and sketching techniques, including thumbnail sketching and visual ideation workflows.

Experience applying composition principles such as balance, contrast, emphasis, framing, and leading lines to guide viewer attention in artwork.

Proficiency with industry standard 2D digital art software, such as Adobe Photoshop, for digital painting, image editing, and photo manipulation.

Experience creating concept art, prop designs, or environment imagery suitable for film, animation, or game development workflows.

Ability to analyze and critique works of art and visual media, explaining how composition and design principles influence visual storytelling.

Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support students from a range of skill levels.

Previous post‑secondary teaching or mentoring experience.

Masters Degree in Fine Arts or higher.

Demonstrated industry success with appropriate and current experience and skills in the entire 3D pipeline including 3D Modeling, Animating, Rigging, Texturing, Lighting, and Rendering.

Experience in Redshift, Arnold, and Unreal Engine.
