Role: Senior Accountant
Job Location: Burnaby, BC
Pay Range: $80,000 – 95,000 CAD
The Role:
The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting tasks for the US subsidiary operation, performing full-cycle accounting, and supporting financial reporting. This role is designed as a developmental pathway to Controller, with increasing exposure to leadership, strategic financial management, and cross-functional collaboration. The successful candidate will be mentored by the Controller and senior finance leadership, with a progression plan to assume the Controller role.
YOUR core responsibilities:
- Manage the general ledger and oversee full-cycle accounting for the US subsidiary.
- Lead month-end and year-end closing procedures, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare and present financial statements and ad-hoc reports to senior management.
- Collaborate with the Controller on complex accounting issues, including transfer pricing and intercompany transactions.
- Take ownership of key accounting processes and drive improvements in efficiency and internal controls.
- Participate in strategic financial planning and analysis, including forecasting and scenario modeling.
- Develop and implement process improvements and automation initiatives.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with department managers and senior leadership to support business objectives.
- Participate in cross-functional projects, such as system upgrades, process redesigns, and new business initiatives.
- Liaise with external auditors and advisors, supporting audit and compliance activities.
Treasury, Taxation & Legal
- Monitor cash flow and liquidity, providing strategic recommendations to optimize working capital.
- Oversee sales tax, income tax, and regulatory compliance for the US entity.
- Develop expertise in US GAAP, tax regulations, and legal requirements relevant to the Controller role.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
- Lead the development of annual operating budgets and long-term financial plans.
- Analyze budget variances and provide actionable insights to management.
- Mentor junior staff and support their professional development.
Reporting and Analysis
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for presentation to senior leadership.
- Provide in-depth analysis of financial results, identifying risks and opportunities.
- Recommend changes to internal controls and financial policies.
What YOU BRING to Watson Gloves:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business.
- CPA designation (or in final stages); commitment to ongoing professional development. Full-cycle accounting experience
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership or supervisory responsibilities.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated experience in financial reporting, budgeting, and strategic planning.
- Strong understanding of US GAAP, ASPE, IFRS, and US tax regulations is an asset
- Demonstrated understanding of payroll processes, compliance, and best practices to support future oversight of payroll operations.
