Position Summary
BCIT’s  Academic, Institute Sustainability  department is currently seeking a  regular, full-time (1.0 FTE ) Director, Sustainability . The position provides strategic leadership and direction to the development and implementation of the Institute’s Sustainability Vision of worldwide recognition of BCIT as a leader in sustainability education and applied research. The role leads the Institute’s corporate sustainability through a coordinated and strategic approach for BCIT community.

The position identifies opportunities and develops partnership to leverage interdisciplinary sustainability innovation and collaboration across BCIT’s operations, education and applied research ensuring the alignment with Institute’s Sustainability Vision.

Duties & Responsibilities

Participates as a member of the AVP’s leadership team and provides input to the department’s strategic priorities and plans. Translates those strategies into workable plans to establish and implement BCIT’s Sustainability Vision.

Builds key sustainability initiatives for the Institute, including a sustainability strategy to promote BCIT’s leadership in sustainability locally and internationally and leverage new strategic partnership opportunities with key partners including governments, private sector and not-for-profit organizations to support achieving local sustainability goals and incorporate Ecocity Standards in future plans.

Acts as a strategic advisor to senior leadership, government, and Board of Governors and related parties to foster growth, innovation and leadership for BCIT’s sustainability.

Maintains oversight of BCIT Policy 1010 Economic, Social and Environmental Sustainability and ensures departmental representation on BCIT’s policy review team to support sustainability aligned policy development across the Institute.

Leads initiatives to pursue and attract new funding partners to support BCIT’s leadership role in sustainability. Secures external funding to expand the applied research and academic agenda, including the Ecocity Standards and related tools.

Liaises with leading not-for-profit organizations to promote the best practice, as well as understanding and development of cities that are ecologically healthy, sustainable, economically prosperous, socially just and caring.

Collaborates with private and not-for-profit sectors to innovate new tools and approaches to advance sustainability education.

Engages funding organizations (businesses and non-profit) aimed at establishing the Ecocity Centre and the interdisciplinary initiatives between or among centres. Advocates BCIT as the leading centre of expertise on measuring the performance of cities seeking to become ecocities operating in balance with nature.

Manages projects including collaborating with key contacts, schools, departments and/or external groups. Leads the implementation of BCIT’s Sustainability Vision by collaborating and advising Schools and departments on sustainability standards and implementation of various sustainability initiatives; supports activities to ensure successful delivery.

Develops educational credentials and programs that incorporate the Ecocity Standards or other sustainability frameworks and involves partnering with other post-secondary institutions or international organizations.

Oversees reporting through existing agreements with Association for the Advancement of Sustainability, Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (AASHE S.T.A.R.S.), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Accord, and Universitas Indonesia (UI) Green Metric.…
