The Burnaby Hospice Society is expanding its Board of Directors and is looking for engaged, passionate community members who want to make a meaningful difference. There are currently three director positions vacant that we are looking to fill.

OUR MISSION
The Burnaby Hospice Society provides invaluable services in Burnaby to individuals and families going through the end-of-life journey. We support individuals who are in palliative or hospice care along with their families and caregivers. We educate our community about death, dying and bereavement.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Burnaby Hospice Society celebrates its 40th anniversary this year as we look ahead to the next chapter of our organization, we are seeking engaged and passionate community members to join our Board of Directors and help shape the future of hospice care in Burnaby.
The BHS Board of Directors provides leadership, governance and oversight for the Society. Together, the Board of Directors establish the organization’s strategic direction, develop and monitor policies and goals, and helps to ensure BHS continues to meet the evolving needs of the community.
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference . Board members bring their experience, perspectives, and unique ideas to the table while helping guide an organization that provides compassionate support to individuals and families during some of life’s most difficult moments.
Board responsibilities include providing:
Strategic Leadership – Setting the Society's priorities, shaping its direction, and monitoring progress toward its goals.
Generative Leadership – Asking thoughtful, big-picture questions, bringing new perspectives to the table, and encouraging innovation and new ideas.
Fiduciary Stewardship – Overseeing the Society's resources, ensuring long-term financial sustainability, and upholding accountability to our members, supporters, and community.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will bring:
A clear understanding of, or strong commitment to learn about, non-profit governance.
Strategic thinking and the ability to contribute meaningfully to the Society's strategic direction.
A visionary mindset and the ability to see the organization's path forward from a long‑term perspective.
Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to develop positive relationships with fellow directors, staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, and other stakeholders.
Financial literacy and an understanding of organizational sustainability and accountability.
An openness to new ideas, innovation, and evolving community needs.
Preferred:
Legal knowledge or experience – Experience in law, legal services, regulatory compliance, risk management, or a related field would be considered an asset. This expertise would help support the Board in navigating legal, regulatory, governance, and risk‑related matters.
You don't need to have all of these qualities or experience. We are looking for people who are curious, committed, collaborative, and excited to help shape the future of the Burnaby Hospice Society.
