Position Overview
Senior Aquatic Biologist – full‑time, mostly office‑based role based in Alberta (preferably Calgary) or British Columbia (preferably Burnaby or Victoria).
Provide technical leadership, guidance and supervision for aquatic biology and water resource permitting on natural resource projects. Lead multidisciplinary teams through proposal, design, construction, and operations phases, liaise with clients, regulators and sub‑contractors, and assist in business development.
Responsibilities- Lead and supervise aquatic fieldwork and mentor a team of biologists of varying skill levels.
- Develop project budgets, methodology, review deliverables and regulatory applications.
- Maintain relationships with clients, regulators and sub‑contractors.
- Provide technical direction, interpretation and defend the technical rigor of work.
- Assist in business development by providing insight and strategic regulatory advice during all project stages.
- Ensure compliance with the Federal Fisheries Act and other relevant provincial and federal environmental legislation.
- B.Sc., M.Sc. or Doctorate in fish or aquatic-related studies with relevant experience conducting and managing aquatic studies (e.g., fish and fish habitat assessments, water quality monitoring, fish sampling).
- Eligibility or current license for professional designation under the BC College of Applied Biology and/or Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.
- Minimum 10+ years of experience as a Fish/Aquatic Biologist in the natural resources sector in Western Canada, preferably in a consulting environment.
- In‑depth knowledge of the Federal Fisheries Act and other relevant legislation in Western Canada.
- Experience overseeing aquatics field work and managing aquatic crews in remote settings from the office.
- Experience leading and providing mentorship for a team of biologists.
- Excellent technical writing skills and experience providing technical review and edits.
- Relevant linear development (e.g., roads, conveyance) or oil and gas regulatory experience.
- Ability to liaise with regulators and provide strategic regulatory advice during all project stages.
- Valid driver’s licence and clean driver’s abstract for travel.
- Experience working with a range of private and municipal clients including oil and gas, mining, transportation, water, infrastructure and energy.
- Client relationship and business development experience.
- Strong time‑management skills, ability to work on multiple tasks/projects and meet deadlines within budget.
- Experience using mobile field‑data apps (e.g., Esri Field Maps or Survey
123).
Base salary range: $95,500.00 to $. Individual pay is determined by location and experience.
