Hatfield is seeking a Senior Environmental Specialist – Fisheries and Aquatics to join our Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Group. This position can be located either in North Vancouver or New Westminster, BC, or Calgary, AB. The successful candidate will have a passion for the freshwater aquatic environment and possess a deep understanding of works affecting fish and fish habitat, associated legislation, best management mitigations, and strategies to navigate permitting requirements.
They will have a solid technical grounding in the design and implementation of fish habitat offsetting projects, baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, fish inventories, and aquatic species-at-risk evaluations.
Responsibilities
Managing freshwater fisheries and aquatics components of a portfolio of projects including environmental effects monitoring programs.
Evaluating fisheries and aquatics programs and providing technical expertise related to survey design according to published standards/guidelines and Hatfield standard operating procedures for, but not limited to, fish and fish habitat baseline surveys, mark-recapture surveys, effectiveness monitoring of restoration/offsetting projects, species-at-risk evaluations, and riparian vegetation inventories.
Providing environmental design input to multidisciplinary teams to mitigate environmental impacts and technical expertise on environmental protection, assessment, permitting, and monitoring.
Overseeing the preparation of environmental permit applications pursuant to the federal Fisheries Act, provincial Water Sustainability Act, and fisheries and aquatics components of the BC Mines Act.
Acting as primary client contact on proposals and projects.
Preparing, submitting, and consulting on design documents and technical reports.
Leading meetings/presentations with/to clients and regulators and stakeholder groups.
Preparing and managing project schedules and budgets.
Mentoring and advising technical staff.
Leading business development activities, including actively promoting Hatfield’s services to clients, strengthening existing corporate relationships, preparing technical and financial proposals, and managing client negotiations.
Working in the field, occasionally in remote locations.
Education and Experience
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant environmental discipline (fisheries or aquatics).
A relevant professional designation or eligible to apply.
7+ years of experience managing environmental studies focused on natural resource development and/or infrastructure projects.
Strong knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislation and environmental impact assessment processes.
A valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years, experience driving a pickup truck, and the ability to meet the requirements of our third-party automobile insurance policy.
