Band 2, NHS AfC. Permanent contract, full‑time 37.5 hrs per week on a flexi rota. Main shift 11:00‑19:00, with some weekend, bank holiday and early/late shifts. No split shifts.

As a Catering Assistant we support daily catering operations, ensuring high quality food service, cleanliness and compliance with NHS standards across Burnley General Teaching Hospital.

• Clean premises and equipment to prescribed standards.
• Operate and clean automatic industrial dishwashers.
• Prepare and cook simple food items, salads, sandwiches, breakfasts and buffet items for functions; prepare simple dietary meals per standardised recipes.
• Plate and serve meals and beverages to patients and staff.
• Probe meal temperatures and record results according to policy.
• Issue food items to wards, manage correct storage, rotation and maintain min/max stock levels.
• Fill, clean and maintain ward beverage trolleys, fridges and vending machines.
• Handle cash, check floats and secure takings in accordance with Trust Standing Financial Instructions.
• Complete documentation and food safety records as directed.
• Safely handle heavy equipment and food items, including lifting, carrying, bending, twisting, pushing and pulling.
• Prepare cutlery and other items for patient meal service.
• Collect patient dietary information using paper and electronic systems.
• Participate in training and apply skills to all aspects of the role.

• Maintain personal hygiene and comply with HACCP procedures.
• Ensure a safe, tidy and compliant work environment in line with Health and Safety Work Act.
• Record and report temperature control, equipment breakdowns and maintenance requirements.
• Attend staff meetings and communicate effectively with hospital staff, patients, and colleagues.
• Assist patients and direct them as required, and refer enquiries to appropriate staff.
• Maintain records for timesheets, food temperature, waste, and confidentiality.
• Respond to complaints and incidents in line with Trust Policy.
• Wear correct uniform and safety footwear per Uniform Policy.
• Keep up to date with core training: fire lectures, food safety, health & safety, safer handling, safeguarding, and refresher training.
• Support training of new and existing staff.
• Report incidents and complaints appropriately.
• Work as part of a team to meet service standards.

• Possess or willingness to complete Foundation Food Hygiene Qualification or equivalent.
• Possess or willingness to complete NVQ Level 2 Hospitality/Customer Care or equivalent.
• Experience of cleaning in a food environment or similar.
• GCSE English and Maths grade C/9‑4 or equivalent.
• Previous hospital or hospitality workplace experience.
• Experience using industrial catering equipment.

• Confidential handling of sensitive information.
• Knowledge of HACCP, cross‑contamination risk, specialised diets, COSHH.
