This position is a .6 FTE, working 48 hours per 2‑week pay period. The role includes 8‑hour shifts, alternating weekend rotations (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), and day shifts from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
The Nursing Assistant assists the professional nurse/caregiver in delivering patient care, transporting patients and equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, and reordering and stocking supplies. The position works under the direction of a professional nurse and may receive patient care assignments based on unit needs and the discretion of the manager or charge nurse.
Primary ResponsibilitiesProvides basic patient care by performing routine duties including:
- Personal grooming, bathing, toileting, feeding
- Skin care needs (clean and sterile dressing changes), applying ointments and creams
- Oral hygiene
- Specimen collection/testing
- Positioning and ambulation
- Changing linens
- Promptly answering call lights
- Assisting the nurse in monitoring patient condition
Other essential duties include:
- Accurately taking and recording weights, input/output, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rates, respiration, and oxygen saturation
- Placing patients on and off monitors or equipment
- Reporting unusual findings to the RN in a timely manner
- Assisting with admissions, transfers, and discharges of patients
- Orienting patients and their families to the environment
- Ensuring patients’ belongings are accounted for and documented upon admission, transfer, and discharge
- Transporting patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies
- Ensuring patients attend appointments on time
- Using transfer belts when assisting patients with transfers and/or ambulation
- Cleansing, setting up, and maintaining rooms and equipment
- Ordering and stocking supplies
- Accurately documenting tasks on appropriate forms
- Performing other tasks as needed
- Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program or another Fairview‑sponsored Nursing Assistant program
- Six months of recent direct care experience in a long‑term, home care, or acute care setting (roles may include Nursing Assistant, PCA, Resident Assistant, or Emergency Room Technician)
- Current enrollment in an LPN, RN, or Nurse Practitioner program, with completion of at least one semester of clinical rotation
- Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire (exemption applies if transferring into another related position)
- Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification (required; OnTrack participants must obtain certification upon completion of the program)
