Ammonia Technician

The Ammonia Technician installs, starts up, and commissions OEM ammonia and natural refrigerant systems, ensuring they operate safely, efficiently, and in full alignment with design specifications. This role combines hands-on mechanical and electrical work with PLC-based control system integration, performance testing, and detailed documentation. The technician also provides onsite training to facility personnel and travels frequently to customer sites across the United States.

• Perform detailed physical inspections and startup procedures for OEM refrigeration units, confirming that all mechanical and electrical components are installed correctly and safely.
• Conduct system startup activities, including verification of piping, welds, electrical connections, and overall system integrity prior to commissioning.
• Integrate and test PLC-based control systems by performing I/O checks and validating that all inputs and outputs function correctly.
• Verify that the control system operates according to the designed sequence of operations, making adjustments as needed to ensure proper system performance.
• Carry out performance testing, including pressure tests, vacuum pulls, and refrigerant charging on ammonia and other natural refrigerant systems.
• Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, thermodynamic, and electrical issues that arise during initial system operation and commissioning.
• Troubleshoot PLCs and control loops, including identifying and correcting PID loop tuning issues to optimize system stability and performance.
• Read and interpret complex Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) to verify system configuration and support troubleshooting activities.
• Perform field service work on ammonia refrigeration systems, including inspection, adjustment, and repair of system components as required.
• Support piping and welding-related tasks as they relate to system installation and commissioning, ensuring work meets quality and safety standards.
• Conduct onsite training sessions for facility managers and maintenance staff, explaining system operation, safety procedures, and basic troubleshooting techniques.
• Prepare and deliver detailed commissioning reports that include setpoints, sensor calibrations, test results, and any as-built deviations for the engineering team.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, including tests conducted, issues identified, corrective actions taken, and parts used.
• Travel frequently to job sites across the United States, including ice arenas and other facilities, to install, start up, and commission chiller and refrigeration units.

• Hands-on experience with ammonia refrigeration systems, including installation, startup, and commissioning activities.
• Proficiency in commissioning industrial refrigeration systems, including performance testing, pressure testing, vacuum pulls, and refrigerant charging.
• Strong PLC troubleshooting skills, including I/O testing and verification of control logic and sequence of operations.
• Solid electrical troubleshooting abilities, including working with control panels, sensors, and field wiring.
• Demonstrated field service experience in industrial or commercial refrigeration environments.
• Practical knowledge of piping systems related to refrigeration, including understanding of layout, connections, and system flow.
• Basic welding skills or familiarity with welding practices used in refrigeration piping installations.
• Mandatory EPA Section 608 Universal Certification.
• Ability to read and interpret complex Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
• Proficiency in diagnosing and tuning PID control loops to resolve stability or performance issues.
• Willingness and ability to travel frequently, often 50–75%, to various job sites across the United States.

• Experience with natural refrigerants such as CO2 (R-744) and Ammonia (NH3) is a strong plus.
• Experience commissioning OEM refrigeration or chiller units in industrial or commercial settings.
• Comfort working in field environments, including customer facilities such as ice arenas.
• Strong communication skills to effectively train facility managers and maintenance staff on system operation and safety.
• Attention to detail in documentation, including recording setpoints, sensor calibrations, and as-built deviations.
• Ability to collaborate with engineering teams by providing clear, accurate feedback from field commissioning activities.
