Extension Agent – Agriculture/Natural Resource/4‑H Youth Development – Powell County
This position resides at the MSU Powell County Extension Office in Deer Lodge, Montana. The primary duty is to assess local community needs and develop, implement, evaluate Extension programming to meet those needs, with emphasis on natural resources, horticulture, agriculture, and 4‑H Youth Development.
Responsibilities- Develop, plan, implement, instruct, facilitate, and evaluate educational programs in natural resources, agriculture, and 4‑H Youth Development based on community engagement.
- Collaborate with faculty in nearby MSU Extension offices.
- Strengthen the impact and scope of Extension Natural Resource/Agriculture programs in Powell County.
- Provide program leadership by working with Extension field faculty and specialists to deliver needed programs.
- Lead stakeholder groups in determining priority needs.
- Work with County Commissioners and community leaders on agriculture and natural resource policies.
- Conduct continual needs assessments.
- Cooperate with staff to develop a team approach to overall MSU Extension programming in Powell County.
- Bachelor’s Degree in natural resources, agriculture, or related fields.
- Demonstrated ability to lead groups, assess community needs, and develop, organize, plan, teach and evaluate effective programs.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit, train, and provide professional development to volunteers.
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership to Extension programming relating to volunteers and youth.
- Demonstrated understanding of adult learning theory and its application to community‑based education and outreach.
- Master’s degree in natural resources, agriculture, or related field and/or relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated facilitation skills and ability to help groups find constructive solutions.
- Possess excellent human relation skills.
- Work with a high level of professionalism.
- Collaborate effectively with staff.
- Demonstrate good judgment.
- Adapt to changing needs.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Build relationships with diverse backgrounds.
Special Requirements
If the successful candidate holds a Master’s degree, the position is tenure‑track; otherwise it is non‑tenure‑track with transition to tenure‑track upon completion of a Master’s. Work hours vary and may include evenings, weekends, travel within the county and state. A valid Montana driver’s license is required.
