A public health detention center nurse provides comprehensive healthcare to inmates, focusing on primary care, chronic disease management and significant public health initiatives like infectious disease control (TB, STIs) within a correctional setting, working with security staff and physicians, to ensure both inmate well-being and facility safety, handling tasks from medication administration and assessments to health education and advocating for population health.

This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow and the Montana Nurses Association, Local No. 37.

Detention Center
  • Clinical Care:
    Conduct health assessments, triage patients, administer medications, provide first aid, and manage chronic illnesses (diabetes, hypertension).
  • Public Health Focus:
    Implement communicable disease screening (HIV, Hepatitis, TB, STIs), manage outbreaks, educate inmates and staff on infection prevention, and ensure immunization protocols.
  • Case Management:
    Handle intake health questionnaires, review medical requests and ensure continuity of care.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
    Maintain accurate medical records, document care provided and report adverse reactions.
  • Collaboration:

    Work closely with correctional officers, physicians, and other healthcare providers to balance medical needs with security protocols.
  • Environment:
    Fast‑paced setting that involves strict security protocols.
  • Advocacy:
    Serves as an advocate for a vulnerable population, focusing on health promotion and illness prevention.
Other Public Health Related Activities
  • Provides immunizations and health screenings in the community
  • Provides patient and community education, including communicable disease classes
  • Assists where needed on various grant‑funded programs, including Harm Reduction, Asthma, Cancer Screening/Control, Chronic Disease Self‑Management, Title X Family Planning, HIV/Hepatitis C prevention and case management, Injury Prevention, Maternal/Child Health, Tobacco Use Prevention and WIC
  • Assists where needed on the department’s Epidemiological Team, training for communicable disease outbreaks and serving as a member of this team when outbreaks occur
  • Assists where needed on various department initiatives, including accreditation preparation, performance management, quality improvement, strategic planning, workforce development, and community health assessment and improvement
  • Assists in developing, implementing and evaluating professional development education, nursing continuing education.
  • Other nursing duties as needed by department
  • Performs all duties and work assignments in a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound manner. Specifically, complying with the Health & Safety Program; maintaining work areas in a safe and orderly manner; identifying and reporting unsafe conditions; reporting all accidents; wearing required personal protective equipment; and attending safety‑related meetings, training sessions, fit testing, etc.

  • Acts responsibly and ethically, and in conformance with generally accepted business, occupational, and professional standards.
