Responsibilities- Responsible for all CWD sampling operations in each Region and coordinating field logistics and surveillance to ensure a successful CWD sampling season.
- Serve as the CWD Program's liaison to FWP staff and the public within their Region.
- Act as lead technician for up to six field technicians, teaching them how to collect and package CWD samples and record required data.
- Organize technicians’ work schedules, collect deer heads for training, obtain permission for sampling locations, and coordinate with meat processors and taxidermists for sample collection.
- Distribute CWD‑related educational materials to various groups/locations and lead educational outreach with hunters and the public.
- Serve as the primary CWD sample collector for their assigned region during the archery season.
- Previous experience as a CWD Program field technician.
- Direct knowledge and experience with all aspects of the CWD Program’s sample collection, data entry, and shipping protocols.
- Competent knowledge of CWD, agency’s CWD management plan, and ability to communicate it to a diverse audience.
- Knowledge of biology, disease processes (especially CWD), animal ecology, anatomy, and population dynamics.
- Basic map reading skills and familiarity with map coordinate systems and GPS units.
- Good organizational and time‑management skills.
- Knowledge of computer applications such as word processing and Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to operate a four‑wheel drive vehicle safely.
- Prior experience in a crew lead or lead worker capacity (preferred).
- Ability to work without supervision in potentially hazardous conditions.
- Ability to work with professional biologists, field technicians, and the public.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Minimum of two years of college work toward a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, fish and wildlife management, animal ecology, biology, or a closely related field, combined with related work experience.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- May be required to acquire and maintain certification in the capture and handling of wildlife.
