Security Officer – Intermountain Health
Provides a safe environment for patients, visitors, employees, and volunteers in office or ambulatory clinic settings. Responsibilities include monitoring visitor or patient activity, enforcing policies, providing assistance and direction, responding to emergencies, and protecting employees, visitors, and property.
Essential Functions- Operates and monitors security technology systems (surveillance cameras, access control, alarm systems).
- Uses de‑escalation techniques to calm individuals and resolve conflicts peacefully.
- Intervenes to protect safety when patients act aggressively, including use of restraints when necessary.
- Ensures regulatory compliance (e.g., HIPAA) and discloses minimum necessary information.
- Responds to bomb threats/suspicious packages following protocols.
- Participates in drills such as infant abduction and active shooter scenarios.
- Performs respectful searches of patients and narcotic searches in compliance with law.
- Conducts safety inspections of walking surfaces, fire extinguishers, and overall facility safety.
- Enforces parking regulations to enhance safety and accessibility.
- Collaborates with HR and law enforcement on investigations, following disclosure protocols.

- Current Driver’s License (if applicable).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or willingness to obtain within 90 days.
- At least 21 years of age.
- One year of prior law enforcement, corrections, public safety, military police, or security experience.
- See and read information, labels, monitors; assess customer needs.
- Communicate spoken information accurately and quickly.
- Manual dexterity for manipulating equipment.
- Lift and move equipment up to heavy items; work on hands and knees, bend and reach.
- If driving required, operate vehicle while reading signs and traffic signals.
Supports a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff by providing security communication, documentation, system monitoring, and dispatch services.
Essential Functions- Promotes mission, vision, values; demonstrates service behavior.
- Communicates with and dispatches Security Officers; monitors radio traffic; coordinates with hospital operators.
- Maintains situational awareness; identifies security risks and acts to prevent hazards.
- Assists patients, guests, staff with general info, access control, badge verification, package inspection.
- Provides public service duties: escorts, vehicle or room lockouts, door openings, battery boosts.
- Patrols parking areas and campus grounds to identify hazards and violations; documents reports.
- Monitors security and fire protection systems; administers access control; initiates lockdowns.
- Maintains knowledge of safety and emergency plans; performs rooftop clearance prior to helicopter arrivals; assesses patient rooms for suicidal/behavioral hazards.
- Creates clear written reports.
- Analytical and observational skills; effective communication; strong organization.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Montana Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 3 months).
- BLS certification within 3 months.
- Montana Security Officer’s License within 120 days.
- Basic computer proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Willingness to work nights and/or weekends.
- Ability to function in a fast‑paced, service‑oriented environment.
- Strong organization and attention to detail.
- Reliable attendance during scheduled hours or shifts.
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Security Administration, or related field with internships/volunteer experience.
- Experience in hospital security dispatch or public law enforcement dispatch.
St. James Hospital, Butte, Montana. Monday‑Friday 40 hours per week.
Compensation$19.95 – $26.38 per hour, based on experience.
