A construction estimator calculates the total cost of a building project before construction begins.
Experience with earthwork and grading, bridge construction, utilities and asphalt paving required. They analyze blueprints, quantify materials, and evaluate labor, equipment, and subcontractor expenses. Their primary goal is to prepare accurate bids that win contracts while protecting the company’s profit margins.
Key daily responsibilities and functions include:
Core Duties- Quantity Takeoffs: Measuring and counting specific material requirements directly from architectural drawings and blueprints.
- Cost Analysis: Calculating the expenses associated with labor, specialized equipment, overhead, and insurance.
- Procurement & Bidding: Requesting quotes from vendors and subcontractors, assembling them, and submitting competitive contract proposals to clients.
- Risk Assessment: Factoring in variables like supply chain delays, market price fluctuations, and adverse weather conditions that could increase costs.
- Value Engineering: Recommending alternative materials or construction methods to reduce costs while maintaining project quality.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Civil engineering or Construction management degree preferred.
- 3-5 years’ experience.
- Must be able to complete a pre‑employment drug screen with a “Negative” result.
- Eligible to work in the United States.
- Be willing to work outdoors in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold.
This role operates in both office and active construction site environments. Candidates must be able to perform site walks, attend field meetings, and ensure on‑site safety and compliance.
