PCA Guidelines and Expectations Clocking in/out

The Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services (MDRS) requires that you clock in and out in a timely manner using a smartphone app which they will instruct you to download. We also have an iPad that can be used for this. It is your responsibility to clock in and out when you are supposed to. If you make a mistake, let us know as soon as possible so we can let our counselor know.

Professionalism

This whole set of guidelines is about professionalism. That said, we just want to note here that even though we can be laid back and chill at times, this is still a job and you should treat it as such.

Communication

It is critical that we are able to get in touch with you in a reasonable amount of time. It is equally critical that you communicate any scheduling issues as soon as they come up. If you have any concerns about the job at any point, you need to talk to us about it. If we contact you by phone, we expect you to get back with us within 24 hours or less.

Our well-being could depend on it.

You are allowed to have your phone at work, but keep personal calls to a minimum. You shouldn’t be calling or texting while you are helping us. See the Cell phones section below for more.

Timeliness

Stuff happens. We get it. That said, you should always do your very best to be here on time. Being late can affect us, our other PCA’s, and our mother. Always call, not text, if you are going to be late. We may not be able to answer our phone (for example, if we’re in bed) so you will need to call our mother’s phone.

Taking

off

If, for whatever reason, you need to miss a shift, please let us know as much in advance as possible. Calling in same-day is definitely not cool and will only be tolerated in actual emergency situations (and those should be very few).

If you do need to miss a shift, one of our other PCA’s will need to sub for you, which in some instances will mean that you will need to swap shifts with another person in order to be off.

We can allow up to five uncovered absences per year. An uncovered absence is when you miss a day and another PCA isn’t able to cover it. It means our mother will need to drop whatever she was planning to do to take care of us that day. Any more than five of these in a year may result in termination.

Not calling and not showing up will not be tolerated and can result in immediate termination.

Following instructions

Different people naturally develop their own routines for how they work. That’s mostly fine. That said, if we want to do something in a particular way, then that’s the way we will do…
