Job Summary

The Mechanic 2 is responsible for intermediate to advanced diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on trailers, diesel‑ and gasoline‑powered vehicles, and plant equipment. The role builds upon the foundational skills and duties of a Mechanic 1. Work is performed on a night shift from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Management retains the right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities at any time.

  • Interpret and understand repair manuals to properly repair equipment
  • Diagnose and repair diesel and gas engines, electrical systems, transmissions, and hydraulic systems
  • Troubleshoot and repair air brake systems, suspension components, and drive trains
  • Use diagnostics software and scan tools to identify and resolve issues
  • Maintain accurate service records and complete work orders in fleet management systems
  • Respond to roadside service calls for disabled vehicles when required
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop and work areas
  • Mentor and assist Mechanic 1 as needed
  • Perform all preventive maintenance and repair work on fleet vehicles and plant equipment—including wheel loaders, skid steers, man lifts, scissor lifts, backhoes, lawn mowers, and farm tractors
  • Review driver vehicle inspection reports and repair inspections as directed by Mechanic 3 or the Fleet Manager
  • Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid checks
  • Inspect and replace basic components like belts, hoses, batteries, and lights
  • Assist in diagnosing mechanical issues using basic diagnostic tools
  • Document work performed and parts used through maintenance logs or fleet management systems
  • Familiarize with and observe all company safety rules and regulations; recognize safety as the top priority and attend scheduled safety meetings
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification programs (travel as needed)
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Brake certification required
  • 3+ years of experience in vehicle maintenance or related technical field, or vocational training plus 1+ year of related work
  • Personal basic tool set for preventative maintenance (based on location)
  • Proficiency in diesel and gasoline engine operation and components
  • Experience with OEM diagnostics tools and software
  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, work orders, and technical manuals
  • Experience with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Detail oriented and highly organized
  • Proficient basic computer skills and use of fleet software
Preferred Qualifications
  • Class A CDL (depending on location)
  • ASE certifications in Diesel Engines, Brakes, and Electrical Systems desired
  • Ability to lead teams successfully
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Self‑starter and self‑motivated
