Occupational SummaryThe primary role of the Campus Safety Officer is to provide personal, equipment, and real property security for faculty, staff, students, and visitors within an assigned area of the Baker College campus. In addition, a Campus Safety Officer provides escort services and basic public assistance, as needed, and performs routine security and public safety patrol duties on campus. The Campus Safety Officer must remain alert to emergency situations and provide first-line response and emergency management.
Roleand Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions
- Patrols assigned area on foot, in assigned motor vehicle, or other specialized vehicle to ensure personal, building, and equipment security.
- Examines doors, windows, and gates to ensure security; monitors closed buildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities.
- Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
- Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such as lockout services, jump-starts, and routine information.
- Watches for and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations; contacts emergency responders, such as police, fire, and/or ambulance personnel, as required.
- Remains alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or security code violators; approaches suspicious persons and/or notifies police as appropriate.
- May provide safe and efficient transportation to college employees, students and/or visitors, as requested, using an institutional vehicle.
- Patrols and monitors assigned parking areas and/or parking garages to provide public security and assistance.
- Investigate incidents/accidents and prepare routine, standardized incident reports.
- Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
- Act as desk officer when necessary.
- Assist municipal, county and state police agencies when appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Two years’ work experience, full- or part-time, in law enforcement, military, or security required.
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
- Officers are required to meet the qualifications set forth by the laws of the State of Michigan and Baker College and are required to carry a firearm as a condition of employment.
- Must provide and carry a personally owned quality large or medium frame semi-automatic pistol in either 9mm or .40 caliber, suitable for duty use; the Director of Campus Safety will be the final arbiter of the suitability of any handgun.
- Must provide and utilize a quality holster with a minimum level II retention rating suitable for duty use; the Director of Campus Safety will be the final arbiter of the suitability of any holster.
- Web, Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Access, and Excel), AS/400, and web-based email.
- Knowledgeable and proficient in computer skills, which allows for the use of computer related technology.

- Must maintain a valid Concealed Pistol License.
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must maintain certification in First Aid, CPR/AED.
This job requires the following physical activities: bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual activity. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move a minimum of 50 pounds.
Work EnvironmentWork performed both inside and outside of buildings. Moderate to loud noise environment.
