Barge Facility Operator

Responsibilities
  • Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre-shift meetings.
  • Perform all duties within compliance of OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations (ISO where applicable); including wearing appropriate PPE for task being performed.
  • Perform deckhand responsibilities such as reading drafts, opening/closing lids, tying off barges.
  • Perform barge loading duties to meet draft and quality requirements and oversee deckhand(s).
  • Transfer, load, and move grain to appropriate location as required.
  • Maintain grain quality while being stored and/or transferred.
  • Complete documentation timely, accurately and legibly.
  • Perform general clean‑up including sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting and other housekeeping responsibilities.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and/or repairs, where applicable.
  • Depending on facility and location, may be responsible for unloading barges, cleaning barges, moving product to storage, loading trucks using heavy equipment, loading rail, loading products to required specifications; operating, running, monitoring, and shutting down dryer; operating a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • No required experience; preferred 1 year of experience working in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.
  • Basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
  • Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of people within and outside the organization.
  • Ability to complete documentation requirements.
  • Ability to follow directions and use logical thought process to interpret oral and written instructions, and troubleshoot problems.
  • Ability to work well both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to use tools appropriate for assigned task.
  • Ability to remain focused on exceptional customer service, both internally and externally.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to balance constantly/continuously.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, twist, crouch, crawl, kneel and squat frequently.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders to significant heights, and work at them.
  • Maintain concentration on tasks without becoming distracted.
  • Recognize grain sample conditions and odor characteristics.
  • Enter data into a computer.
  • Grasp and reach frequently.
  • Lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs. occasionally to continuously, depending on daily needs.
  • Use and maintain PPE; pass PFT and fit testing; pass required testing under FRA and DOT where applicable.
  • Work in confined spaces and on barge surfaces with deep/swift water.
  • Stand and walk constantly/continuously.
  • Communicate verbally (in person and over two‑way radio) and understand written instructions.
  • Operate equipment such as vibrators, railcars, and open gates where applicable.
  • Work extended hours, weekends, holidays and/or alternate shifts as needed; 12‑hour rotating shifts.
  • Operate in high dust, extreme weather and humid conditions.
  • Travel 5%–20% of time, including off‑site training or work at alternate locations.
Pay

Base pay range: $18.00 – $24.00 per hour. Actual pay offered may vary depending on location, job‑related knowledge, skills and relevant experience.
