Under the general supervision of the Electrical/Instrumentation Supervisor, an Electrical/Instrumentation Technician I, II performs a variety of skilled electrical work related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial low and high voltage electrical motors, motor controls, and related electrical equipment and skilled instrumentation work related to the installation, maintenance calibration, and repair of electrical, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical instruments used for measurement and control of water and wastewater distribution and treatment processes.
Responsibilities- Troubleshoot electrical and instrument problems in all systems at plants, pumping and lift stations, and buildings.
- Use a variety of test equipment, including analog/digital meters, ohm meters, high voltage meters, amp meters, high potential testers, calibrators, and data recorders.
- Identify, isolate, repair, fabricate or replace parts, components, circuits or panels, and install new or repaired parts or components. May modernize and upgrade systems and components where economically advantageous.
- Perform corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance, testing and calibration on analyzers, leak detectors, public address (PA) systems, fire systems, security systems, radio equipment, standby generators, personal air monitoring equipment, motor bearings, services, motor control panels, distribution panels, electrical components, instrumentation; screen, valves, gates, dampers, actuators, boilers, conveyors, HVAC, and other related equipment and appurtenances on a regular basis.
- Schedule, oversee, and inspect work performed by contractors and vendors; specify tasks to be performed; monitor compliance testing and performance issues associated with the contract; and assist in project or contract completion.
- Maintain comprehensive logs on completed maintenance; research components and products; requisition and maintain an adequate inventory of necessary spare parts, shop, and vehicle supplies.
- Review and update electrical plans, specifications, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
- Program, troubleshoot, and modify programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and distributed control systems (DCS).
- Document work, provide updates on open work orders, and complete work orders in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Perform work in a safe manner at all times; comply with safety and health policies, procedures and practices; attend and complete all mandatory safety training courses and events; and work to ensure the safety of co-workers and the general public.
- Principles and techniques of maintaining and repairing electrical and instrumentation equipment.
- Electrical and instrumentation troubleshooting methods and procedures.
- Electrical components and wiring configurations used in industrial systems.
- Testing procedures used to detect problems, including operation of test instruments.
- Equipment associated with water reclamation plants; composting facilities; water treatment plants; pumping stations; lift stations, tanks; and building automation systems.
- Water treatment and distribution, reclaimed water, composting, and pumping processes.
- Control systems and PLC, SCADA, and DCS troubleshooting, repair, and programming.
- Safety practices and procedures including but not limited to high and low voltage, lockout/tagout, confined spaces, and safety data sheets (SDS).
National Electric Code, OSHA safe practices, and ISA standards.
- Read and interpret drawings, diagrams, and schematics including loop drawings and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
- Provide guidance to less experienced technicians, operators, and others.
- Update plans, drawings and schematics.
- Perform competent repair work and troubleshoot all plant electrical/instrumentation components.
- Understand control systems.
- Utilize on‑going corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance programs.
- Use Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Manuals.
- Operate office equipment, including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, email, database, and CMMS.
