Job Summary The Shop Technician is responsible for repairing and maintaining all County Fleet Department and contract vehicles and equipment, which may include emergency vehicle up-fitting and police car fabrication. The principle duties are performed indoors but may be exposed to inclement weather conditions. Supervision is provided by the Fleet Director, with Lead Shop Technician available for guidance on uncommon issues or situations.
Key Responsibilities
* Fleet and Equipment Maintenanceo Perform general vehicle maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on all fleet vehicles, contract vehicles, and other related equipmento Perform preventative maintenance, including oil changes, brake jobs, tire rotations, and alignment so Perform repairs on hydraulic systems, drive trains, suspension systems, hoses and belts, steering systems, heating and air conditioning systems, ventilation systems, and emissionso Perform troubleshooting and repair work on sophisticated and technical emergency equipment associated with public safety
* Fabrication and Weldingo Weld and fabricate equipment, parts, shields, gun racks, etc.o Enhance police vehicles, including installation and wiring all lighting, electronics, and communication equipment, and related modifications
* Teamwork and Public Serviceo Work cooperatively and constructively with fellow workers and members of the public to provide public service of the highest quality and quantity
* Other Dutieso Collect and preserve mechanical evidence from vehicles for reconstruction purposeso Perform all work duties and activities following County policies, procedures, and safety practices in accordance with automotive industry standards o Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications
Skills and Abilities
• Familiarity with emergency vehicle up-fitting and police car fabrication
• Proficient in the operation, repair, and maintenance of heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, and automotive systems (engines, electrical, and drive trains)
• Skilled in welding (electric and acetylene) and component fabrication
• Knowledge of safety practices with air-powered equipment, lifts, hoists, and tire breakdown equipment
• Proficient in using personal computers and software for maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs
• Use diagnostic and electronic equipment for repairs
• Skilled in operating mechanical tools, heavy equipment, and vehicles
• Ability to follow instructions and comprehend repair manuals
• Demonstrate integrity and inventiveness in assigned tasks
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with the public and colleagues
• Ability to perform a wide variety of tasks with accuracy and efficiency under time-sensitive deadlines
Special Qualifications
• Must possess and maintain a valid Idaho driver's license
• Must obtain an Air Conditioner Recovery Certification within two (2) years of hire
• Must obtain a Radar Certification Equipment license within two (2) years of hire
• Must obtain a DEQ, A, B, Tank Operator Certification within one (1) year of hire
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification preferred
• Must successfully complete a background investigation
• Must be able to work on call after normal business hours to respond to emergencies
Education and Experience
• High school diploma or GED equivalency is required and two (2) years of specialized coursework in automotive maintenance and repair
• Four (4) plus years of technically related experience preferred
• Equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered
Essential Physical Abilities
