Substation Quality Inspector / Surveyor

Job Description

This role provides on-site quality assurance for civil and grading activities associated with substation projects. The Substation Quality Inspector / Surveyor supports the Substation Transmission Construction Civil group by overseeing field work, verifying that construction adheres to grading plans and specifications, and ensuring that survey and civil construction activities meet project quality standards.

Responsibilities

+ Provide on-site quality assurance for civil and grading activities on substation projects.

+ Perform surveying tasks using robotic instruments, GPS, and data collector instruments to support substation construction and grading work.

+ Read and interpret grading plans and soil reports to verify that field work aligns with design specifications and project requirements.

+ Monitor civil construction work in the field to ensure compliance with quality, safety, and project standards.

+ Document field observations, measurements, and quality checks accurately and in a timely manner.

+ Communicate effectively with project team members, contractors, and field personnel to address quality issues and coordinate work.

+ Utilize Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, to prepare reports, maintain records, and manage project-related documentation.

+ Work independently in a field office on the job site, organizing daily tasks and managing time effectively to meet project deadlines.

+ Use computers and/or iPads to access project documents, enter data, and support digital workflows in the field.

Essential Skills

+ Minimum 5 years of surveying experience using robotic instruments, GPS, and data collector instruments.

+ Experience in substation, survey, and civil construction environments.

+ Ability to read and interpret grading plans and soil reports.

+ Strong oral and written communication skills.

+ Self-starter with strong organizational and time management skills.

+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.

+ Ability to work effectively in a field office located on the job site.

+ Proficiency with computers and/or iPads for field data entry and documentation.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+ Preferred previous experience in civil construction works.

+ Preferred experience with reading and interpreting grading plans and soil reports in a substation or similar environment.

+ Good interpersonal skills to collaborate with field and project teams.

+ Motivation to build experience and gain exposure within a large utility-focused environment.

Work Environment

This position is based at a General Services Complex in Calera and in the field at active substation construction sites. You will work primarily in a field office on the job site and spend significant time outdoors overseeing civil and grading activities. The role involves using robotic survey instruments, GPS, data collectors, computers, and iPads to support daily tasks. The work environment combines office-based documentation and reporting with hands-on field verification and inspection of construction activities.

This is a Contract position based out of Calera, AL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
