Overview
This position is located in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS), Weather Forecast Offices (WFO) or National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). Vacancies exist across multiple locations. The salary range is $40,736 – $94,563 per year, varying by location.
Responsibilities- Integrate forecast weather, water, and climate hazards with associated societal risks to produce and communicate life‑saving impact‑based warnings, advisories, outlooks, and general forecasts.
- Support the development and delivery of interpretive services and impact‑based decision support, including tailored products, specialized notifications, remote briefings, and on‑site deployments to core partners in public safety.
- Collect, assess, analyze, and integrate environmental data to provide forecasts of critical elements at global, synoptic, and meso‑scale levels.
- Collaborate and co‑create with colleagues to improve day‑to‑day operational functions of the Weather Forecast Offices and National Centers.
- This is a typical office setting with rotating shift work required to support 24/7 operations. Employees may work beyond regular hours during severe weather events, which can create mental and physical stress.
- Incumbents must maintain sharp focus during highly stressful events and may need to stay on alert while the public evacuates.
- Applicants must be U.S. Citizens and suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
- Applicants must meet the Basic Requirements: positive education requirement and one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service.
- Applicants must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- One year probationary period may be required.
- Relocation expenses are not reimbursed.
- Security clearance:
Low Risk. - Background investigation required; ongoing employment depends on successful completion.
- Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related natural science major. Required coursework includes at least 24 semester hours of meteorology/atmospheric science, physics, and additional related science courses.
- Graduates of accredited U.S. institutions only.
At least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower GS level. Experience may be paid or unpaid, including volunteer work through national service programs.
