Description

The Indigenous Programming Student Assistant, Continuing Education reports to the Director, Domestic Programs and will work closely with the Education Program Innovation Specialist, as well as a variety of team members within the unit. The Student Assistant will work with internal stakeholders, Indigenous communities and Indigenous organizations to support access to education for Indigenous peoples and to develop programming related to Indigenous peoples, cultures and histories.

Primary Purpose of the Position

The Indigenous Programming Student Assistant will work up to 20 hours per week. The role will support the exploration and development of Indigenous-specific programs, as well as other programs. The Indigenous Student Program Assistant duties will support administrative tasks, student support, stakeholder engagement, market research, program development and process development.

Qualifications/Expertise Required
  • Preference is for a student currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program, such as Arts, Commerce, Communications, Education, Indigenous Studies, Science, Social Science or Social Work.
  • Some related experience in student support, market research, competitive analysis, and engagement.
  • Ability to follow directions, understand priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong working knowledge of workplace technologies such as Microsoft Professional Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams) or Google Suite of Products.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, time management, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to perform multiple and varied tasks with attention to detail.
  • Ability to take initiative to manage projects independently and seek support.
  • Positive attitude and demonstrated ability to be a collaborative team member.
  • Some related office experience would be an asset.
  • Some community engagement experience would be an asset.
Accountabilities/Tasks and Duties

The Indigenous Programming Student Assistant performs a variety of duties in support of Continuing Education’s Indigenous programs and initiatives, as well as other initiatives in Continuing Education. The Indigenous Programming Student Assistant duties may include but are not limited to market research, Indigenous engagement, content development, action planning, and student advising. Specific duties include:

Administrative Support
  • Support student program registration, course enrollment and tutoring program delivery activities
  • Provide logistical support for in-person and virtual events including scheduling meetings, participant communication, and other event setup.
  • Ensure prompt, respectful, and responsive communication with students, staff, and community members
  • Input, verify, and update data into systems, databases and/or dashboard systems (e.g., Excel databases) in accordance with records management compliance policies at UCalgary
  • Ensure data accuracy by cross-referencing source information with existing records and conducting regular audits of data into systems, databases and/or dashboard systems (e.g., Excel databases) to identify and correct errors or inconsistencies.
  • Perform records management in compliance with UCalgary policies
  • Perform meeting logistics and minute-taking
  • Perform other administrative duties as required, such as but not limited to tackling small projects to help reduce workloads for the team.
Program Delivery Support
  • With the Education Program Innovation Specialist, maintain and report on grant requirements
  • Research grant opportunities and compile a database of available grants and funders
  • When applicable, support the grant writing process
  • With support from the Education Program Innovation Specialist, provide and gather information to support Indigenous students regarding Indigenous programs
