As a Market Analyst, you’ll play a critical role in the CER’s energy information work, one of our core responsibilities. Accordingly, you can make key contributions in guiding the CER’s energy information strategy, analysis, and programs.

The Market Analyst will report to the Director, Energy Markets, within the Energy Information Business Unit. They will help guide the Energy and Pipeline Information Program. This includes supporting energy information publications, advising on energy information, enhancing data management strategies, and actively supporting colleagues through coaching and mentoring.

Detailed duties may include:

• Lead and support adjudicative processes by conducting technical analysis, advising Commissioners, and drafting decisions.
• Communicate and present energy data and information products to a variety of audiences, including technical staff and senior leadership.
• Lead multi-disciplinary teams in developing and publishing energy and pipeline information products, including content for interactive maps, data analysis, and online data visualizations.
• Conduct research, analysis, and drafting of energy and pipeline information products, including market snapshots, pipeline profiles, content for interactive maps, and online data visualizations.
• Contribute to the design and maintenance of both a relational database and non-relational database including implementation testing, quality control, table design, and access management.
• Collect, manage, validate and visualize energy-related data using SQL, Python, and Power BI.
• Write scripts in Python to scrape data from a variety of data source types, including PDFs, excel, csv, and webpages.
• Develop and build relationships throughout the CER to facilitate collaboration and knowledge-sharing in data management, energy market analysis, technical expertise, web product development, and design.
• Utilize enterprise platforms and systems and follow CER policies and processes in program activities.
• Leverage a variety of CER information systems such as the Commodities Tracking System (CTS), REGDOCS (a regulatory database for activities and transactions conducted at the Canada Energy Regulator), and the Data Lake (database) to develop and validate information about the facilities we regulate.

Work environment
This position is based in Calgary, Alberta, and requires in-person presence according to the CER’s Hybrid Work Policy.
