Senior Functional Analyst

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Reporting to the Team Lead, Energy Settlement System, the Senior Functional Analyst plays a key role in the implementation and ongoing operation of the Enspire suite of applications as part of the AESO's Restructured Energy Market (REM) program, a multi-year initiative transforming Alberta's electricity market.

The Enspire platform includes market settlement, commercial model management, offer control, outage submission, price validation, and market power mitigation applications, enabling the AESO to operate Alberta's electricity market more efficiently and reliably.

In this role, you will lead functional analysis efforts across the Enspire platform, partnering with business stakeholders, product teams, vendors, and technical resources to implement and enhance mission-critical market systems. You will support complex system implementations, facilitate Agile delivery and Scrum practices, gather and refine business requirements, manage product backlogs, and ensure solutions align with evolving business needs while delivering long-term value across Alberta’s electricity market.

Lead stakeholder workshops to gather, document, and validate business requirements and define ESS functionality scope. Translate business needs into clear, actionable functional requirements, serving as the liaison between business stakeholders, technical teams, and vendors. Facilitate Scrum Master activities, including standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives, while managing epics, user stories, tasks, and product backlogs to support delivery. Develop end-to-end process diagrams, documenting as-is and to-be processes to support ESS solution design and implementation.

Identify gaps, risks, and opportunities for enhancement and process efficiency across product delivery. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Quality Assurance, Technical Teams, and Change Management, to support solution design, testing, and implementation. Review and validate vendor design documentation to ensure alignment, consistency, and traceability with business requirements. Support SIT/UAT testing, issue triage, root cause analysis, solution validation, and operational readiness activities, including cutover planning.

Maintain comprehensive documentation, including business requirements, functional specifications, traceability, change management, and delivery artifacts. Analyze and report on data to identify metrics, KPIs, and business insights that support solution design and delivery decisions. Facilitate stakeholder alignment and consensus on business requirements, priorities, and delivery decisions. Provide expertise on industry best practices, regulatory requirements, electricity market operations, and emerging technologies within the electric utility sector.

Support organizational adoption through training, communications, and change readiness activities. Contribute to the ongoing design, development, and enhancement of the ESS product, ensuring it continues to meet evolving business and market needs.
