News and Assignment Producer

CBC News Calgary is looking for a News and Assignment Producer to work with journalists for its broadcast and digital platforms.

This is a one-year contract

This is the perfect opportunity for an innovative editorial leader with a proven track record in local news play a key role in the CBC Calgary newsroom.

Working alongside our news team, you will focus on working with reporters assigning and producing stories that resonate with audiences and are targeted to the platform where it will be consumed, radio, streaming platforms, and linear television. You will also map out and produce various presentation elements, writing, vetting and cutting elements, and coordinating with producers, reporters, on‑air staff, writers, editors, videographers and other staff members.

You will have a demonstrated knowledge of broadcast strategies and trends, an understanding of how audiences consume content across platforms, and experience with growing audiences in the digital landscape. You will have experience vetting the work of others, you will have a strong desire to experiment with new forms of storytelling.

You will also have experience in breaking news scenarios where you have demonstrated the ability to quickly make editorial decisions in high‑pressure situations under tight deadlines.

And you will have a clear understanding of CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Excellent writing abilities and experience in audio and video editing systems is a must.

The successful candidate will need to have a deep understanding of the issues and diversity of Calgary and southern Alberta and will ensure this diversity is reflected in our stories.

This is a collaborative work environment, so a team player with first‑rate communications skills is a must. You will need to juggle and prioritize multiple stories and tasks, and to thrive in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment. And yes, you know how to have fun, too.

We Are Looking For a Candidate With The Following
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with at least 8 years of practical and relevant experience.
  • Recognized excellence in writing for broadcast news (streaming, television and radio) providing quick turnaround when producing scripts and editing video.
  • You will also have experience creating non‑traditional visual storytelling and knowledge of how to use sophisticated graphics and other pacing techniques.
  • Strong contributor of ideas, stories and treatments. Innovative with programming ideas. Curious, incisive and critical thinker.
  • Passionate about exploring the diverse communities that make up Calgary and southern Alberta and their stories, issues and ideas.
  • Demonstrated experience with non‑linear editing programs like AVID or Adobe Premiere Pro is preferred.
  • Demonstrated skill in digital writing and in using social media would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and shaping television and video program lineups and a station’s assignment process is desired.
  • Experience working with radio current affairs programs is an added asset.
  • High level of organization and productivity.
  • Strong & enthusiastic team player with good communication skills.
  • Initiative taker, with ability to be productive in individual and team settings.
  • Able to work flexible hours.
