DescriptionThe Globe and Mail is seeking a Calgary-based reporter to join our national news team on a 2-year contract. Alberta is the fastest-growing province in the country and a pillar of the Canadian economy, with a growing separatist movement that is challenging national unity. This is an opportunity for a driven and ambitious journalist who wants to help Canadians understand the forces shaping Albertans and the wider impact.
We are looking for a reporter with a demonstrated ability to break news, produce clear and compelling enterprise pieces and develop high-impact coverage. Curiosity, versatility and collaboration are a must. The successful candidate will work with reporters in the Calgary bureau as well as other areas of the newsroom and across the country.
- Frequently pitch compelling story ideas
- Develop sources to break news and produce exclusive stories
- Write clearly and on deadline
- Work with colleagues across the department and wider newsroom to brainstorm story ideas as well as the best way to tell them
- Think beyond standard storytelling formats and participate in Globe subscriber events
- At least five years experience reporting for a news organization
- Interest and experience covering politics
- Knack for identifying issues in Alberta that will resonate beyond the province
- Strong writing with versatile range - from hard news to human-interest feature to explanatory
- Solid news judgment with a track record of enterprise work
- Comfortable working in a variety of formats, including live blogs, newsletters, video and audio
This position is based in the Calgary office and requires a minimum of two days a week in office.
