Our client is a Calgary-based nonprofit organization currently in a period of significant strategic growth.
The organization operates within a regulated, government-funded environment and is building out its executive leadership team for the first time.
The Opportunity A newly created executive role reporting directly to the CEO, serving as a peer to an incoming COO. The position carries a formal CFO-Designate pathway, with transition to Chief Financial Officer expected following an initial performance period, subject to Board confirmation.
This is a strategic leadership appointment, not a senior accounting function. The incoming executive will help build the financial architecture that supports the next decade of organizational growth.
Key Responsibilities Strategic Financial Leadership Develop and maintain multi-year financial models aligned with the organization's strategic plan
Advise the CEO and Board on capital readiness, risk thresholds, and long-term financial sustainability
Build and maintain board-ready dashboards, scenario analyses, and financial reporting frameworks
Lead enterprise-wide financial risk assessment and mitigation planning
Develop long-term debt, liquidity, and reserve strategies
Strengthen financial governance practices across the organization
Capital Development & Fund-Stacking Lead financial structuring for major capital projects, including development pro formas and sensitivity analyses
Manage lender reporting, covenant compliance, and draw management on capital programs
Oversee compliance with government and institutional funding agreements
Develop and maintain capital reserve policies aligned with long-term asset sustainability
Support exploration of innovative financing mechanisms including blended finance and community investment structures
Government Funding & Compliance Ensure full adherence to all regulatory and government reporting requirements
Oversee annual audit processes and financial statement preparation
Manage restricted funds, capital reserves, and grant compliance obligations
Strengthen segregation of duties and internal control frameworks
Anticipate and mitigate financial and compliance risks that could impact the organization's standing with funders and regulators
Entity Structuring & Social Enterprise Readiness Advise on optimal organizational structures to support long-term asset stewardship and governance alignment
Assess the feasibility and implications of affiliated or subsidiary entity structures
Evaluate governance, tax, and compliance considerations across potential multi-entity arrangements
Ensure clear financial separation and transparency between operating, charitable, and enterprise activities
Design financial controls and reporting frameworks that support multi-entity governance
Financial Systems & Infrastructure Lead optimization of ERP and financial reporting systems
Build scalable financial processes capable of supporting continued organizational growth
Develop and track financial KPIs across operations and capital programs
Strengthen forecasting accuracy, budgeting discipline, and management reporting
Executive Leadership & Culture Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team, including Controller, accounting, and payroll functions
Serve as a collaborative and accountable member of the executive leadership team
Partner closely with the COO on budgeting, forecasting, capital planning, and resource allocation
Contribute to Board and Audit Committee meetings as a senior financial resource
Foster a culture of integrity, clarity, and financial accountability across the organization
Ideal Candidate Profile CPA designation (required), with 10+ years of progressive senior finance leadership
Experience in capital-intensive, asset-heavy, or government-funded nonprofit environments
Demonstrated capital financing and fund-stacking experience
Fluency in navigating government funding agreements and compliance environments
Experience with multi-entity or complex organizational structures
Advanced financial modeling capability
Board reporting and governance experience
Calm under pressure, with the maturity to operate effectively in a scaling organization
Collaborative, high-integrity executive style with strong communication skills
Compensation Compensation is competitive at the executive level and confirmed upon engagement.
