Position Overview

Human Resources Manager – Calgary, Alberta (9423 Shepard Road SE, Calgary, Alberta T2C 4R6). This role reports to the VP of People and Culture and partners with business leaders to provide HR guidance while ensuring operational excellence in employee relations, recruitment, payroll, HR administration, and HR systems support. Direct reports include an HR Coordinator, Recruiter, Payroll Specialist, and an HRIS administrator.

Key

Performance Indicators (KPI) HR Operations Leadership (Weighting 25%)
  • Lead, coach, and develop a multidisciplinary HR team delivering day‑to‑day HR operations, including advisory support, recruitment, payroll, HR administration, and HRIS support.
  • Set priorities, allocate work, and ensure timely execution of core HR processes and employee service delivery.
  • Provide senior HR business partner support to leaders on employee relations, workforce planning, performance management, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Establish and monitor HR service standards, workflows, and team accountability for consistent and efficient HR operations.
  • Drive the standardization of reporting and HR processes and support the future transition to an ERP.
Employee Relations & Performance Management (Weighting 25%)
  • Support and advise managers and employees in resolving workplace issues, conflict resolution, and progressive discipline.
  • Guide leaders through the performance management process, including goal setting, reviews, coaching, and development plans.
  • Ensure a consistent, fair approach to employee relations to foster a respectful and compliant work environment.
  • Maintain accurate records of disciplinary actions, performance discussions, and employee concerns.
HR Compliance & Policy Interpretation (Weighting 20%)
  • Interpret HR policies and the employee handbook in compliance with Alberta Employment Standards and applicable laws, recommending updates.
  • Participate in policy reviews and support company‑wide communications and acknowledgements.
  • Oversee compliance-related reporting and ensure documentation is complete, secure, and accessible.
  • Stay informed on legal and regulatory changes affecting HR practices and recommend policy adjustments.
Employee Lifecycle Management (Weighting 20%)
  • Oversee end‑to‑end employee lifecycle processes, ensuring timely, compliant onboarding, job changes, transitions, and offboarding.
  • Partner with the Recruiter to align hiring activity with workforce needs and ensure a seamless handoff into onboarding and integration.
  • Mentor and support the HR Coordinator responsible for processing employee changes and maintaining accurate employment documentation.
  • Ensure the HRIS Administrator maintains accurate employee data and supports effective use, maintenance, and continuous improvement of HR systems.
HR Reporting & Payroll Compliance Oversight (Weighting 10%)
  • Review HR metrics and operational reporting including headcount, turnover, absenteeism, recruitment activity, payroll inputs, and service delivery trends.
  • Provide oversight to payroll processes through the Payroll Specialist, ensuring accurate and timely coordination of employee changes, approvals, and supporting documentation.
  • Use data and team insights to identify process improvement opportunities and strengthen the effectiveness and scalability of HR operations.
  • Manage sensitive personnel information with discretion while ensuring strong controls, data integrity, and consistency across HR processes and systems.
Qualifications
  • Diploma or degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • CPHR designation (or working toward it) is an asset.
  • 8–12 years of progressive HR experience, including a senior HR Business Partner, HR Manager, or similar leadership role.
  • Demonstrated success leading or mentoring HR team members across advisory, recruitment, payroll, HR administration, and HR systems.
  • In‑depth knowledge of Alberta Employment Standards, HR best practices, and workforce compliance.
  • Experience coaching leaders, resolving employee relations matters, and driving practical HR solutions in a fast‑paced operating environment.
  • Strong operational mindset with experience improving HR processes, overseeing service delivery, and using HR data and systems to support decision‑making.
  • Professional, confident communicator capable of navigating sensitive matters with tact, credibility, and integrity.
  • Experience supporting Trades and Engineering occupations is an asset.
